I'm still relatively new to chasing reds in the flats, but do they normally shift behavior this time of year? For months they were hugging shorelines and shopping for their next meals. For the last three weeks I haven't seen a single fish against the shoreline, but groups are marauding across open water to feed. It's easy when they are exposed or flashing tails, but when they are slowing down and staying deep, locating them is more difficult. I worked hard to locate fish this morning in the Nueces delta, but eventually I got the hang of recognizing the barely perceptible fish signs and caught some good ones. Six of the nine I caught were upper slot and chunky. I am enjoying the new challenge, but wondering when they'll go back to playing on the shorelines so I can break out the fly rod again.

I'm not sure about the current crab situation but they don't seem to be massed against the shore.

From a kayak, getting ahead of open water fish with a fly rod is much different than getting ahead of them along a shoreline. Open water fish change directions a lot and half the time they end up under my kayak and spook ...oops. I like using the flyrod, but when conditions favor a change I'm pretty quick to respond. Plastics are working well because I can snap cast to moving fish from a distance. It's keeping the stringer full, and my itch to play with the flyrods will be satisfied soon when the white bass call me from up river. Very Happy

You, like Zia, seem to adjust to the what the fish want. Keep up the reports...
