This heron has been hanging around my son Randy and his wife Shayna's backyard all day. First they thought he was here just drinking water from the pool but then it wasn't acting quite right. Later on they noticed it wasn't there but they got a call from the next door neighbor said it was in the canal under his dock and didn't look good. Shayna , who's a vet and also works out at the ARK, saw it and jumped into canal, grabbed it and took it out to safety and is taking it over to the rehab center as I write this. Way to go Shayna!

Here's a picture of her getting ready to x-ray the neck and then a picture of the blockage in the throat. She was able to get whatever it was out and the heron's doing fine.

How did that bird know where she lived? Laughing
Great Job!

Great work. Interesting - the blockage appears on the posterior side of the vertebral column if I have the film oriented correctly. Stellar veterinary medicine.

Good Job taking care of the wildlife. I have been trying to find someone to notify about a pelican with a broken wing. I encountered him/her near Marker 2 by Dimmit Point (NE side of CCNAS) over two weeks ago. I notified the base MWR and they said they would notify someone to pick it. It's still there as of yesterday, able to swim, walk and eat, but cannot fly. I even agreed to capture it, but no one wanted to take care of it. Suggestions?

Have you tried Texas P & WL or your local Tx Game Warden, because they seem to know local rehab folks, at least that's what I see on TV! Laughing

I'll try Texas State Aquarium tomorrow, as they are listed in TPW as rehabilitators for Nueces County shore birds.

Thanks, SWD

There's a rehab place on Padre Island by packery Park. Also might try the ARK in Port A
