Not much effort here, it's lazybutt fishing while the wife does her power walk thing. Lines hit the water at 7 am. We were on the way home by 10.
Sat in a lawn chair and soaked clam fishbites in the channel. Result was three sand trout, half a dozen croaker and a barred grunt. None were keeper size but it was a bit surprising, I have not hooked a croaker in almost four years and I've never landed a Barred Grunt so I can mark that one for fish bingo.
I miss the massive croaker runs from when I was a kid. They are tasty.
Lots of bait in the water, mostly on the larger side. No one else in view seemed to be catching anything at all. |

Thanks for bringing back the memories.
We use to hit Fish Pass jetties back in the early 70's and would hit the Golden Croaker runs in late October and November. Those were some good trips with my Father and brothers. _________________

| I was just talking about the croaker runs with my son the other day when we were going across the ferry. People used to be lined up elbow to elbow catching nice size croaker like crazy. |

When I was a kid fishing in Sabine Lake with my Dad I didn't even know there were any other fish in the sea, but croaker! Like everyone one else here, a lot of fond memories! |

Here is a link to a post on the Dos Frio forum that has some great pics and stories about the croaker runs in the old days...

I had the honor speaking at Texas A & M Corpus at a S.E.A. meeting about size limits and brought up T.P.&W. considering adding Croaker to the game fish status to help the numbers and not be able to use as trout bait, and got booed off the stage from local guides.
At least i tried..... They are one of the best table fare in our waters. Maybe the lack of guides and customers fishing for trout the next few years will help thier numbers. |
