A little late, and will try and upload pictures.
Now my cousin her boy and his BF/cousin had never surf fished, they fish the bay off a boat. So this was totally new to them.
I arrived Sunday around 5 and went to fish Pack park, one rat red, a few whiting, and about 100 mosquito bites, I should have gone to the surf.
Monday OTHER people woke up late so we left very late, we fished right at the Nueces Klegberg marker, started catching ladyfish and whiting all day until we left around 9pm. BTW, the driving in better shape than the SPID access road.
On Monday, my nephew wanted to fish pack again so we did until 4:30, the we headed to where I had wanted to all along, mighty PINS. So I took the kids and my cousin down to the 8mm, I have never fished that close to the black top, always go down at least to the 15. Had a really deep 1st cut, around 18in with a steep drop going up to the 1st bar, that's where we fished from the 1st bar.
Both days the water color was amazing green and ultra clear, not like chocolate milk like most times. Very manageable wind.
Birds were diving near shore, explained to them why this was THE place to fish, ha like I know how to read the surf, first cast nephew one lands a BIG ladyfish, 3mts later 2nd nephew does the same, they are using shrimp, I am using soft plastics. Fifth cast I land a big lady also, it seems like we hit a large school of lady fish with mixed whiting, it stayed like that for an hour. My cousin got in on the action fishing the bottom for whiting....."then it got deathly quiet and he began to talk"..... sorry ADD kicked in, then it started, nephew lands a 15 1/2" trout, then and 18, 2nd nephew lands a really fat 21in trout, the 1st nephew lands a PB 24in red, then another trout is landed. With more ladyfish and whiting along the way.
So from 5:00pm until 9:15pm when we left, it was none stop action and the kids had a blast and I think I converted at least one to the beauty of the surf.
I didn't catch any reds or trouts. Just memories that for me are priceless and of far greater value. The kids learned a lot of new things fishing the surf and I know they will want to do it again.
I can't wait to get back on the surf, it had been way to long for me.

excellent report. I almost teared up thinking about how my old man let us run wild and discover the surf fishing (and crawl out to junked cars in the surf and retrieve lures and tackle at low tide) "the saltwater will cure those barnacle cuts"
Way to go to get the young ones hooked on the surf! _________________ "In your guts you know he's nuts" |

Tyler, I am taking my hardly used ultra light in August, if they are thick again it should be a blast with the spincast Shimano and 5ft fenwick combo.

DrKyle,
North bound traffic has right of way.
Don't get stuck, if you do get stuck, don't spin your tires, you will bury yourself down to the axle.
Carry a shovel with you.
Know how to use your tools the 4x4 and shovel.
4x4 does not mean your rig is invincible.
Have fun.

To add to this:
Carry a good high lift jack, 2x6 or 2x12 board to put jack on, tow strap, and a bucket for water. Dig out around tires, jack up the truck. back fill with sand and pour water on sand to pack it. Then drive out. Or if still stuck makes it easier to be towed out. _________________ Shane |

I totally endorse the bucket. Once a stuck vehicle is jacked up, and the sand filled in, soaking the sand in the hole and in front of the rear tires can do wonders. (But it assumes, you bring a jack, stability wood for the jack, and a 5 gallon pickle bucket). Sage Advice. Slow and steady out of the hole is the key. If you gun it, you're right back where you started. |

If your tires are heavy load tires (PSI 50+) on a 4x4 truck, and you're willing to take your time (as in, you'll be going 30-35) air down your tires to 32 PSI. So long as you pay attention to any sidewall dangers (drive around them, not over them), you WILL NOT get stuck unless you hit a pure shell bank. The extra surface area of the tires turn them almost into tank treads. Just bring a portable air compressor with you to air them back up when you get back to harder sand and/or hardback. Works like a charm if you're hauling a trailer of any kind as well...air down those trailer tires. And the ride even on a rough beach is MUCH smoother. Even if you have "street tires" (30-40 PSI), airing them down a bit has the same effect to a degree. But those high PSI load tires turn into freakin butter knives in deep, soft sand. _________________ Fish ON! |
