That's my goal for this summer. I'm getting a tarpon on a lure off the PA jetties.

What I'm messing with is leaders. Every tarpon book I read stresses that wire is a sure fire way for tarpon to pass on your lure so 40lb mono and flouro are the go to leader material.

The issue is, off the jetties I'm far more likely to get hit by a King.

In an effort to avoid sacrificing expensive lures to the fish gods, what would be a suitable weight of mono to handle Kings?

JIA,
Back in the heyday of my BHP fishing 60's-70's), I hooked more tarpon and kingfish on 80# test stainless wire leaders than anything. Around this time last year while catching trout off the FP south jetty surfside, I saw, casted to and hooked a small tarpon cruising the rocks with my trout rod. Got some jumps outa it before my lure and it headed into the GOM. What a hoot!
Check out this link: https://www.bullbuster.net/community/articles/how-to/what-fishing-line-should-i-use-for-catching-kingfish

Good luck!

Depending on water clarity and size of fish your targeting id base your leader by the conditions and style of lures. I believe with a more fines approach you wouldn't have to deal with kings biting you off using 40lb fluro on smaller fish and 60lb on some of your different casting plugs. I use 80lb at night and have caught two tarpon from the jetties on 25lb and trout rods and gulp shrimp

I personally plan on trying this Islamorada style, with a slip float set at about 5' with about a 3-4" live blue crab.
Would have to be some ideal conditions for that here, water color, size of surf and direction of tide.

There is "another" fishing board that shall not be named that has an exclusively Texas Tarpon board

Not going to go the bait route, strictly lures. if I can find a decent fly reel I'll try that way too, I have an old Fenwick saltwater rod of my uncle's.

Don, over at Roy's, can help you with whatever tackle you might need as far as fly fishing for tarpon.
