|
|
Drove down to Mansfield this past Friday and on the water by 5:30 pm. Got to the cabin and got settled in. About 4:30 am Saturday morning a severe thunderstorm passed through. It was a bad one.
I had to run out and move the boat to face in to the strong north wind. Praying I didnt get hit by lightning or blown in to the bay I managed to get the boat redirected. Ran back in to the cabin and hunkered down for two hours.
When it was all over I went out to find the back end of my boat under water. Worst feeling ever! I drug it to shore and got most of the water out. We got a ride back to port. Reported it to my insurance and got the boat towed back.
I'm leaving San Antonio in the morning headed to The Sportsman in San Benito for him to get all fixed up.

| Dang to bad. I have been to cabin many times with bad storms. One night got an alert from National Weather Service that Kleberg County was under a tornado warning. Was there with the wife no others any where close. That was a little scary at night hearing this with heavy rain and lighting and trapped with no where to hide. I always have run a bay boat with a SELF BAILING DECK WITH SCUPPERS. This sure helps in a heavy rain. Also always tie numerous rope at different angels to boat and dock. |

| Could wait for it in Arroyo City, eat Jerry's tamales, Chili Willie's onion rings, and catch schoolie trout all night. |

| Sorry about your boat. I guess that was a nasty feeling in the stomach seeing that. |

Manuel, it appears from your post you have a Shallow Sport? I'm surprised it's not self bailing? If it is and still went under were the boxes in the rear filled with water, thus the sinking, or were your scuppers stopped up? Your reply may save someone else from experiencing the same.
I hope you did not do what I did once, I went to a friend's cabin near the 9 mile hole for a couple of days, so we were loaded. After we arrived and had most of the gear in house I went out to retrieve the gear out of my rear boxes which I have rigged for bait wells(about 25 gallons each) and learned I had left my sea valve(the site did not like the right word) open so the boxes would fill! Most of the items in the boxes were not effected by being wet, except for a battery charger I had taken since I expected to be trolling a-lot. Needless to say I don't leave the sea valve open anymore or store perishable items in the boxes, ever!

Sorry to hear the news. We fished PM Thur-Fri-Sat and may have seen your boat being towed in past us on Sat. up by the weather station. A SS was towing another SS.
It was very sporty Friday morning too, with the north sky about as dark as I've ever seen. Corpus must have been pounded. We got caught in it for a brief down pour and the rest of the day Friday was good. We didn't leave the harbor until 11:00 am on Sat due the rain and ran north. One of the cleats the boat was tied to went missing in the storm. I can report that once the wind decided on where it wanted to come from in the afternoon we found total awesomeness in an epic bite.
Good luck and hope you get back on the water soon. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

That is too bad about your boat, hope she recovers. I would imagine it would be self-bailing as many have mentioned, so I do also wonder how that happened. From the picture it looks like only the starboard stern was submerged. The engine might be okay. Looks like you sunk the power pole though. Perhaps that was the issue - maybe the power pole plugged up the starboard bailing port? But yeah those were some nasty storms. Expecting more this weekend. _________________ All things will pass. @ ziacatcher - Thank you and yes, a very sickening feeling.
@BayFly - It is a Shallowsport Sprint 18 and is self bailing and the scuppers were not stopped up which is puzzling to me as well on how this happened. There are no windows facing the pier so I could not keep an eye on it. The waves, wind and lighting were so bad I could not have stayed outside with the boat. Although I left slack in the ropes I'm thinking maybe the front of the boat somehow got hung up on one of the pilings for a bit which kept the back end low enough and long enough for the water to pour in and self bailing couldn't keep up. That's me assuming so I just don't know. I didn't buy live bait so my live well was empty and I had it plugged up using it as somewhat of a dry storage for my wading gear. It to was submerged and full of water.
@lifeaquatic - I was towed by a 23' Explorer with a white 175 Suzuki (Rooster Charters). He had me get in my boat and pull the plugs so we could all the water out. Once we did he was able to get it on plane. It was sometime between 4-5 pm when we were going by the weather station.
@bd0202 - The engine is good. The shop is thinking new jackplate, minn kota talon, and some rewiring. Practically all the connections in the back with the battery were like eroded and barely hanging on. The positive cable with just a few twist broke right off. I'm thinking replacing the Interstate marine battery with a sealed battery. All the battery acid came out and destroyed all the terminals for the jackplate pump and whatever else that had a terminal in there. _________________ Shallow Sportn' it |

| From the looks of the photo it appears it could have been much worse. I hope they get it up and running for you soon, and you can avoid the storms in the future. I wish I had a suggestion as to how you can avoid such a dunking in the future, but it's hard to understand what happened from the photo. Better luck next time! |

Agreed, and yeah I can imagine there was some extensive electrical damage. Honestly I'd consider running entirely new wiring harnesses and everything, including getting the sealed battery. You just never know. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
