My son was fishing the canals behind his house at Padre isles and the last day he wasn't catching anything on a typical stuff. So he pulled out our old reliable for the rivers and lakes here in New Mexico. A brown rooster tail. He proceeded to catch four trout (one keeper), 2 rat reds, two ribbon fish and an eel. Might have to add that to my arsenal while fishing my canal as well.

Good idea! I've caught a pile of fish on rooster tails but never tried them in the salt.
Almost time to be slingin them for the spawning white bass and crappie! |

probably won't be doing much fishing here in the next couple days. Expecting anywhere from two to ten inches of snow. Only got 4".

I thought there was a state law you had to use Shyster spinners?
and yes, it's supposed to rain for the next 50 hours - I was on the Guadalupe yesterday, and it really needs the water. |

I have a few rooster tails. I love throwing them, but I like Mepps better. Very happy to see a picture without a gold spoon |

| used Mepps spinners for many years in fresh water, My concern would be that they would rust in a short time. Also, if a upper slot red got it in his crushers, it probably would no longer spin. |

Had a ton of them at one time, bought some Yankee's entire tacklebox full at a pawnshop. The salt, skipjacks and ribbonfish made short work of them.
Some of the bigger ones for salmon have stainless hooks and blades. I throw them around the rigs offshore, just treat them like a jig and they well get hit on the drop. |

Used to troll Canyon with a Pico Texas Trailer rig, Shyster in back and white-bass-marked Bomber up front. Caught my first 4-y-o 20" white bass on that rig. (5 in a lifetime, the rest on fly rod).
make my own barbless single-hook spinners for guests on the Guadalupe tailwater.
Mepps wants $7/pop for theirs.
When I was a kid, the Cabelas catalog contained nothing but lure-making, rod-building, and Quick spinning reels. |

thanks, bro.
It was probably 20 years ago I ordered enough parts to make 50 spinners from Cabelas for $25.
Back then my dad would wade the river with me and spin fish.
I don't think Cabelas even sells this stuff any more, but if you google lure making, can find websites who do sell it.
It's kind of a natural step from fly tying.
You need the barrels, blades, beads, the wire spinner blanks, and some good wire-bending pliers.
I always put a swivel on mine so anyone can tie them directly to their line. |

Yellow shyster was probably the first lure i ever bought, along with a white one - those were it for around my cousins stock tanks. Throw in a h&h spinner and we were done, until we heard about plastic worms. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

Just cast, let it sink a little bit and then a slow steady retrieve |
