I recently inherited a few surf and offshore rods from my uncle, all are older Fenwicks in various lengths from 6'-11'. By my guess they are all over 50 years old. He taught me to cast with one of them.

The blanks themselves are still in good shape but the cork handles are crumbling. Is there anyone local that does this sort of repair?

I found several places on the net, but the idea of shipping rods does not fill me with confidence. Confused

4x a month? Shocked Very Happy

Just move here, then. Geez. Wink Rolling Eyes

J/K, sort of. Job market here is horrendous. But I mean, I made the trek from the same area, and I still don't get sick of seeing that bay view every single time I leave the apartment, and being able to tell my dad I got a line in the water anytime I want. Although I am starting to think about getting a home. Something older on the north side. Not on the south side in the flood plain with the rest of those yahoos. But then there's always Portland, Ingleside, AP/PA, and Rockport.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread. But really if you're here 4x a month, you really should just consider coming on down permanently. Plenty of places here that do rod repairs and restoration, obviously.

It's not really that bad a trip, I have a car that gets 38MPG. Very Happy

I have three relatives in a local nursing home so most of the trips are just overnight, I seldom get a chance to fish.

John,

You can order the cork or get it at Roy's in CC. It's really not very difficult to replace the cork. When I worked with my son's Scout troop the owner of Flex Coat came to our troop meeting and showed the kids how to make a rod, including making the cork handles. Although the entire process of making a rod is pretty easy, making the handle was probably the easiest. Flex Coat probably still has a website and you can probably order the cork and epoxy to glue the handle together from them, among other sites I'm sure. BTW, the owner of Flex Coat is the father of the guys who started, and still operate Yeti!

All it takes to replace the cork is the stack the cork rings on the butt of the rod, epoxy it together and sand it to the shape you want. I love the cork handles and don't use anything else. If your's need cleaning just take a wet wash rag with detergent on it and gently rub the handle as you grip it. If the cork is in good condition it will generally come out like new!

I'm in CC now, but spend about half my time in Austin, so if I can help you get started just let me know.
