Just a note, this weekend I was approached by panhandlers on the beach. (the usual asking for gas money thing) One with a serious hygiene problem on foot, the other was a group of skeevy looking people in a maroon minivan with Oregon plates. There were several others cars that looked like they were being lived in.

We were nowhere near Bob Hall, in fact we had gone thru the PINS entrance and were just north of the bollards. This was early, about 8am. I think they overnight on the beach and head back to town in the mornings.

I had to look up SKEEVY , as I had not heard that word before.

Meanwhile, the Nueces County deputy sits roadside, monitoring speed limits on the road into PINS, day in, day out. A thankless job, but nobody has to do it. Maybe beach patrols would be just as thankless, but a presence could help. Just running the plates on suspicious vehicles would break up the monotony a bit.

Quite often I've been south of Bob hall and I've seen kleberg county sheriff's patrolling all the way to the sticks

Sorry for be redundant, but I'm anxious to see this story on one of the television shows like Investigative ID which fully examines what happened, and even interviews the culprit or murderer, as in this case.

You guys and girls stay safe out there on PINS. As much as this has been publicized it may attack some of the less desirable to PINS thinking there are a lot of unsuspecting beach lovers (and fisherman) to take their pick of.

'When I originally heard of the details of this sad event, I originally guessed cartel-related. Then when everyone found out it was a guy from Utah, they immediately started denying that idea.

I've never dropped that idea for a single second. Color, race don't matter. Is it a bit north for them? Yes. But is it not them? Tell me it's not. To me, it all adds up. They protect her and her baby for him. Still, why these victims? I don't know.

Truck, trailer, drugs, all of the above?!

I was told not but a few months before this event that a contractor where I work traded his F350 in for a F250 and got a check for $35000 remainder because the dealer claimed "the cartel is buying up as much HD trucks as they can right now". Whom else has ever heard of a dealer writing checks instead of collecting them??? Exactly.

Something to think about. Build The Wall!

Thanks for posting this - you see bits and pieces but this article has it pretty well put together.

So basically, we caught one that was over-known, and now there's another even worse. Great - but not surprised. We can't keep up. Stay armed, stay vigilant. #BuildTheWall

The main thing I got from those articles is that "dang, we are doing a lot of drugs".

I can't speak for what goes on up the beach north of the sticks, so I think down PINS is a completely different animal. I generally assume everyone is packing down island whether they are legally qualified to do so or not.

That being said, whatever the ultimate circumstances of this case eventually reveal, I don't think it changes much down island, or at least I hope not.

I am actually more fearful of an incident involving some sort of trigger happy person who may or may not be impaired taking matters into their own hands in a misunderstanding or non life threatening situation.

I can remember one time when I managed to get my F-250 stuck in Yarborough Pass. We were camped with another truck at the 17 and I was with another camper(person) when we got stuck at Yarborough. Our third camper back at the 17 camp.

Rather than walk back the 2 miles to camp, I instructed my friend to start walking back toward camp in the hopes of getting a ride on the way so he could get our other truck.

I would start walking north to another camp about 1/2 mile away to get a ride. If it worked out we could pick him up on the way to the camp at the 17.

It was approaching nightfall and as it turns out, there were no camps between the 17 and 15 and no traffic had passed. So it was up to me to get a ride, hopefully from the camp at the 14.5.

Now, I had gotten to the beach the night before and had camped in Yarborough that night. I fished Yarborough in the morning and did great on topwater and was supposed to meet the other truck during the day, which I did. We fished the beach, set up camp, drank a lot of beer, and I had a good time being full of myself from the morning's catch. In fact the reason we got stuck in Yarborough was because I wanted to go back there and do a sunset wade. I had had no trouble going in and out of the pass and so we did not even bring a shovel or any other equipment from camp.

So, I approached the camp at the 14.5 mile mark. It was a 20 something guy and his girlfriend. It was still light out and they had just started a fire. I had made myself known from about 50 yds away so as not to startle them. I can only imagine their trepidation seeing this 40ish year old half drunk dude with no shirt on and bedraggled wild look on his face coming from out of nowhere.

As I got closer I could see the male go and rearrange some stuff in the truck cab. I assumed he was getting his piece to a convenient location-I never confirmed if this was the case.

All I can say is that I could empathize with the homeless as I pleaded my case and my plight. The story was convoluted. My truck was stuck in Yarborough, but that is not where I wanted them to take me. I had a friend we needed to pick up on the way to a camp miles away, where there were more people like me who could help. Yeah, sure.

At first I got resistance to help because they were concerned about getting off of the beach before high tide which was coming in less than an hour. However, after assuring them that high tide did not mean that the tide was coming all the way to the dunes or anywhere close, did I finally get some assistance.

Everything worked out fine and we plied them with a few beers of gratitude once we got to camp. In years since I have played this scenario over in my mind and wondered if I would have helped me under those circumstances.

I was in a bind and was prepared to press my case further with the couple had the need arisen, of course without crossing the line. But we all have different definitions of where that line is.

In general, weird things can happen on the beach with alcohol, guns, desperation, and fear. Throw in an incident like we have in this topic into the minds of beach goers on top it, makes it all the more dangerous.

When my wife and I were young, she was 23, we were camping on the Current River down from Montauk State Park in Mizzou. This was early March and temps were in upper fifties most of the weekend. We came in on a Sunday and were staying a week. It was just us in the whole area. On Tuesday, this rather scary looking dude showed up. We had two fairly decent size dogs with us. He had a giant bowie knife strapped to his leg. This is the conversation. "How you all doing. Saw you all come on Sunday. Been watching you and thought I would say hello" We had no idea how or where he was. "How long you staying." "A week." Nice dogs, can I feed them some dinner." "Uh, no you may not." Me "You out here doing some hunting?" "Nope, don't hunt." "Fishing then?" "Nope, don't fish." "Why do you need such a knife then?" No answer. I pretty much had a defensive stance at this point, being a Marine and all. So, that night, he sat in his beast of a car, pointed straight at us, and started the engine every 30 minutes like he was needing heat. Wasn't that cold. My wife was freaking out. So, next morning, I got up, put some cans up, pulled out the 9mm, showed why I shot expert, dropped the mag and put a new in and put the gun back in my waist. He left and we never saw him again. Now, had he done something to us, would the conversation been drug deal gone bad? My wife and I do not even smoke pot. Which is why I am not quick to condemn victims before the facts come out.

Agreed. Semper fi. But you were carrying, A NH or CT couple probably wouldn't have been - if innocent. They are not familiar nor accepting to Texas gun laws as we are.

That being said, NPS lifted their rules in 2014 to match state carrying laws - which means in the state if Texas you don't need a CHL/LTC to have a gun in your car, RV, boat, etc - it' PRIVATE property!

The rest of your story ended up okay. I'm not saying and/or good - but at least better than this poor couple fared. But as you re-iterated: be prepared, always be armed - license or not. The license only applies if you use it 'outside' your property.
