My 21 year old son loves Roys. He saved up some money and bought a falcon rod. less than 2 months after the purchase the cushion that covers the bottom fell off. He got some birthday money so he was going to take it back and use store credit and get a green Loomis. They told him it was too used and the manager told him that in his 35 years of working there he had never seen that happen. They just told him and my wife who went with him that there was nothing they could do and to contact Falcon about the rod. My wife said the manager was rude and dismissive. The ironic part is they cost themselves 150$
and Roys is not his go to fishing store anymore. ok rant over just wanted to share our experience in case you are buying Christmas gifts at Roys.

Falcon has always made a great rod, and I have yet to have the first problem with any of the many I have. However, most retailers occasionally have a "customer no-service" person handy, so you must have found Roy's token one.
I generally buy my Falcon rods online these day, because few of the dealers, including Roy's and Academy carry the full line. I'm sure there is a better rod out there for the specialist, but for my purposes for the last 50 years Falcon has satisfied most of my needs. It's interesting to me your son was going to move to a G-Loomis, because that is the only rod I have ever had break while casting it! I hope Falcon treats him like they should if he chooses to go that route. G-Loomis did not treat me very well!

Why are you sniveling and whining on an online forum instead of talking to Roy or Rocky? I've known them for over 30 yrs and that is NOT the way they do business.

I put this on here knowing I would get the exact response I got from you. You were not there so you have no idea what went on. So you are calling my wife and son liars. Honestly what I would expect from someone who defends rudeness at a place of business.

I'm not sure anyone was calling anyone a liar. Maybe just saying you should try talking to the folks in charge, not one of their underlings, so they can make it right if it needs to be so made.

Lett me go into a little more detail. When they walked in the worker went and got the manager. The same person who told them he had worked at the store for 35 years. I would think it would be safe to assume that the person they talked to was at least upper management. Also he had a receipt from his purchase. At almost any other store they would at a minimum give you store credit. The fact that were rude and dismissive is why i posted this. Think if you buy someone a Christmas present and something goes wrong with it and they try to take it back and are treated rudely. Some of you others might have had the best service history from them. In fact before all of this Roys was my sons favorite store. You can attack me all you want but I felt like I should post this for something to consider when Christmas shopping.

well, what's the return policy at Academy on shoes? if you wear them for a month or so, would you try to return them and get full credit? same thing...

send the rod back to falcon and I'm betting they will fix it...have your son save up and go buy the G-Loomis...

he could probably get several All-Stars for the price of one G-Loomis, but as you said, we don't know your family...

Good point. Except he fished with it less than 5 times. So to answer your question if I bought a 100 dollar pair of shoes from Academy and wore them 3 times and a piece fell of yes I would expect full credit.

At no time in my previous post, did I call you a liar but since you used my metrics (35 yrs) we're going to put everything in context.
Thirty five yrs ago Ennis Joslin was a traffic light,Roy's store was no bigger than the area behind the counter now and Roy ran it by himself with help from Rocky and Helen after school and on weekends.
I was a poor, broke Bluff Rat with a house full of kids and no hope of ever being able to afford one of his custom rods. Roy sold us all the parts at bargain prices (I think a 552 blank was $60),showed us how to build a rod wrapper and made sure we had the right size thread. The Guerra family is a classy bunch that worked their fingers to the bone to get where they are today.
I have no clue why you chose to attack them right at their peak selling season but I hope you fail bigly.

>> there was nothing they could do and to contact Falcon about the rod <<

Fishing is a rough sport - using a rod or a reel 3 times on one of my pins trips can be pretty intense. The problem is with the rod and the manufacturer, based on what you said. Take their suggestion. Blaming Roy's - nope. Wont carry very far here.

Speaking from personal experience Academy would send you to the manufacturer after 2 months. Had it happen with a pair of $250 Nike soccer cleats. My daughter wore them once and the sole started to separate. Due to work travel, weekend travel etc we couldn't get back to the store with the cleats for 7 weeks. We were told at 2 different locations that we need to talk to Nike, we were outside the return period. Once quick call to Nike and it was taken care of, new cleats shipped that day.

I am not defending anyone's behavior or rudeness. 2 months is a long time and the store has no way to tell if the rod had been used 5 or 50 times. Check's Roy's return policy it you are outside of that policy then like most other retailers they will send you to the manufacturer. Best bet is to contact the rod manufacturer

Well ... I'm no grammarian and I have no points to give, but I do feel 'bigly' works better than 'largeish' Rolling Eyes

The motivation behind the post was the rude treatment that they received at the store. You can say what you want about return policies or that they sold you cheap fishing equipment 200 years ago. None of that changes the fact that two people went to the store and felt like they were disrespected by the people working there. If they had just said our return policy is this that would have been one thing. There was no reason to go into the 35 year part of it and be rude to them. Also I am glad you support the store. I think you might have a different feeling if your family members had went there and received rude treatment.

I feel I should weigh in on this since I had a fairly similar thing happen....

Bought a falcon rod, broke within the first few trips, went to Roy's and was told that I should contact the manufacturer. I dont remember this encounter being unfriendly, or rude in any way but got the impression they didnt like to do returns, but in all honesty, who does? I contacted falcon, got a replacement. Took the rod out, let a buddy use it, snapped within the first 5 casts. Contacted falcon, got another replacement of a different model this time (upgrade). Took it down the beach, a buddy slammed it in the tailgate, called falcon, even though it was clearly not their fault, got a replacement that has worked good since. I suggest contacting the manufacturer, it was easy, cheap, and effective.

I will say this, you can shop at academy or d ic k s sporting goods all you want, but good luck getting them to carry what you want or need on a regular basis. In my opinion, the only store that even comes close to Roy's in this area is Tackle Town in Rockport. You can find what you want, when you go to get it 99.9% of the time. I have not had a bad encounter with any of their staff even when they've been slammed and its 5 minutes til close (or after close... Embarassed ). I hope you give them another chance and maybe you will see why the rest of us think so highly of them.
