A couple of days ago I went on my annual Venice LA trip. We did something very unusual at least to me this year. We went offshore a few miles to target Tripletail and Cobia. We fished a weed line that had large hyacinth clumps and grass mats. There were tripldtail on every clump and mat, hundreds of them, all you wanted to catch. The Cobia were there also but not as many and more difficult to catch. We caught allot of them on a flyrod my buddy brought on the trip, switching out until it broke on a big Cobia.

The whole day was surreal, calm, flat with allot of fish.

Who do I fish with? Its kinda complicated.

We stay at a lodge just north of Venice, the venice palms. We have been going there 8 years now. The lady that rents the place sets us up with guides. We have several folks so its usually 4 boats, around 10 people. Two of the guides have been consistent, the other two have changed every time.

I totally expected to be fishing for redfish. I mean even as we left the dock I thought that was what we were going to do. But our guide drove the boat out to see how calm it was. When we stopped about a mile out I asked him what we were doing. He told me then that we were going to try and catch tripletial and cobia. He said he did not want to say anything at the dock and that it was totally dependent on how calm the seas were.

It was calm and we were the only ones out there. Look at the pics. Its like being on a lake. I can find out more if you are interested. Our guides name is Josh. But other than that, I just pay our trip coordinator.

The second day we did fish in the marsh. We caught reds, trout and flouder. it was not bad but not as good as the day before.

Thanks Donnie. Any other info would be appreciated. A good friend who guides on the White River in Arkansas for monster brown trout and I have talked of going to the LA coast and fishing. White river trout fishing is insanely good. Many guides guarantee a limit or the trip is at no cost. Brown trout have to be 24 inches to be a keeper. River has rainbows, brookies, and cutthroat too. The browns are all native.
