Did anyone notice the new regulation for shark fishing hooks?
When fishing for sharks in state waters, anglers are required to use non-offset, non-stainless steel circle hooks, except when fishing with artificial lures.
I believe that there was a topic earlier this year about the possibility of this happening. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

The better question is, how do I keep sharks off my lures? I've caught several small ones on Gulp shrimp. They also will hit a spoon. |

non-stainless hooks are only required for bait - if you catch a shark on your bloody red lure with stainless hooks, it's legal in both state and federal water

While I use mostly circle hooks there are some rigs I use other hooks. Soooo what if I have one of those rigs our for reds and I catch a shark then what here we go again. I suppose just plain old surf fishing would be hard to prove you were after shark but then some of those rigs well there would be no question. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. | you guys may be reading too much into this, and definitely extrapolating - it's simple politics, making the state reg match up with the Federal reg. |

I guarantee you the shark fishermen are not reading too far into it. It's a total gray area when you chunk out a whiting head for a bull red and catch a shark unintentionally, but it sure looks like you were fishing for shark...
Sure, it would be hard to explain a big ray or jack slab and say it was for redfish, but there are lots of baits that do double duty, freelined mullet for example, croaker, and any live bait you dont happen to throw a circle hook in.
Some people just want to be on the right side of the law and this particular law makes it incredibly hard to do that without the appearance of possibly violating said law. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I never saw a circle hook before I moved down here. They work pretty good. But I dont know if there needs to be a law about it. Isnt there something more important to do? |

of course there are more important things to do - see windmills, state ban on phosphorus fertilizers, and desalination for public water supply.
The original CFR was very likely minor appeasing those against shark fishing as a concept - the Feds throwing a bone (rather than banning shark fishing - this is how politics works).
I still see the glass as half-full. |
