I am going camping at the mouth of the Colorado river this weekend. I was told to be careful in the water because Bull sharks like fresh water. Is this true? Never heard of this before. Ive caught a few Blacktips Bonnet heads and Atlantic sharpnose before and would LOVE to add another species.
And if they are there.... Any special bait? I usually use Whiting Pompano and Stingray if I can get it.

Yes. The original shark attacks that inspired the movie Jaws came from New Jersey in the early 1900's, and it was thought that a bull shark was the culprit.

I've personally gill netted young bull sharks 15+ river miles up Tres Palacios , off Matagorda Bay. They go way up river to pup their young. The adults would never be held by the gill net, but obviously, they were there. They have been taken hundreds of miles up the MS River.

I wouldn't worry too much about a bull shark in the Mouth of the Colorado. Not saying they ain't there, but feeding isn't likely on the females mind. And most pupping happens in the summer/fall - right when you want to be there!!! . Shocked Laughing

Go have fun. Good luck fishing.

I lived my whole life in upstate NY. Never had an opportunity to fish saltwater before I moved down here in 2012. We are meeting friends from up there who are on a big cross country family trip before there first kid goes to college. I would love to put them on some fish while we are there. Would be even better to get a shark while they are here.

I don't believe everything I see on TV, but I believe there was a show on Shark Week I saw one time that said they've been not only spotted but caught as far as 60 miles inland up-river. But yes, I wouldn't worry about it much.

Bull sharks can not only live in fresh water, but they can reproduce too. They have been found over 2000 miles up the Amazon river and something like 1800 miles up the Mississippi.
