Started out today fishing at Santa Cruz lake which is just outside of Santa Fe. Was throwing spinnerbaits various types and picked up a couple trout. Here's some pictures.

After fishing there for a while we made it back in the direction of Taos taking the high road through some mountain communities. I'm taking little flyfishing action in the Rio de los Pueblo.

What started out as a pretty fun time on the river turned out to be a bummer at the end. After changing flies early on I put my fly box back in my pocket but I didn't zip it closed. After hooking a fish and bending down to release it my box of flies fell out of my pocket into the river that was flowing at 225 CFS. It was long gone by the time I was able to try to reach for it. Bummed out came home, grabbed a glass of Cabernet and watched the sunset from my front porch.

Losing the stuff sucks - but what gorgeous country. I dont think we have country like that in Arizona - my closest to what you have there- was fishing for northern pike in the high country lakes (lake mary - south of flag) - and then fishing for stocked rainbows etc. in the streams up in that same area. Post those pics, z-man.

By the way, i threw your favorite plastic worm , in the slightly clearing surf last evening , nada. I also threw pretty much every lure I had - there were bait fish out the gazoo there - but the water was still a bit cool.

I have a set of lures - my favorite (johnson sprite) , yours - , my sons (your lure but in green and bright yellow or red tail), if nothing touches them , i figure , its time to cut bait, or take pictures.

Living the dream!!!! Great pics as usual!

To bad about the flys! I dropped a box of lures off the PA north jetty one time and watched it float away! Like throwing money away.

June/July Rockies trips are always a vacation just for the 45-degree mornings.

Beautiful spot and nice photos - where's the fish?

Released as usual. My wife was the photographer and I didn't have my phone with me. Good thing or I probably would have dropped that in the river as well

We'll be going through Santa Fe in a couple of weeks. Hoping I could find some waters like that to fish in!

You said you're going through Santa Fe. What direction will you be heading leaving Santa Fe? I might be able to tell you some areas to fish. Another cool thing is if you have a pass to pins a lot of areas here are accepting that pass. All BLM lands give you access to the same pass

We'll be heading up there next weekend, plan to stay a day or 2 in the area then head North towards Colorado. Staying in the Grand Junction area once we get up there. I've never done any freshwater fishing aside from Gar fishing, so this will be all new to me.

sounds like a fun trip. I'm assuming when you go up towards Grand junction you'll be heading through the four corners area and Silverton and ouray. If so that's awesome. Don't know what the rivers are flowing like up in Colorado but the smaller streams here in New Mexico are starting to slow down and making if somewhat fishable. Best bet for somebody who has not fished freshwater very much would probably be the lakes. My go-to lures in The lakes have been mepps spinners or rooster tails in the horse hair brown colors. Also Pete's flies that are weighted. Some of those can also be used in the deeper pockets of rivers. Also in lakes salmon eggs and even kernel corn on a very small hook will work as well. I'm sure bulldog can help you with other types of baits to use

Nice pics.
Donnie: You must not have ever been in the White Mountains of Arizona around Alpine, Show Low, et. al. as that high country is higher than the New Mexico area shown in the pics with numerous forest, lakes, streams and lots of game animals.
That part of our country is a great place to live or visit.

Elevation of Alpine is just over 8000'. Taos is right at 7000 and Show Low at 6300

No, I havent Mike. My 'mountain' fishing in arizona was around the rim area - off rim road, and Lake Mary - south of flag where northern pike were what i fished for. I fished for trout in oak creek canyon - up north of Sedona. I had friends that hunted on the white mountain apache res - but dont think they fished it, if they did they didnt mention it.

I remember that was the "go-to" bait for rainbow and brown trout in Colorado when I was a kid. Kinda like shrimp here. You'd always catch something on it. I think we still have a bottle or two, well aged I'd say - not sure how long their shelf life is but fun to look at anyway.
