Here goes.
We try to come down once a month. Occasionally we camp sometimes just a day trip.

Sometimes we find ourselves wanting to spend 2 days but not have to deal with the packing and loading issues (lungs on my part) so we are trying to find a cheap but clean hotel/motel on the island.
Part of the problems we have run into in the past is if its a Saturday night they require a 2-3 night minimum, at least during tourist season. The other is cost, for some of the prices I hear I could stay at the Omni on the mainland.
Also would like but not require the ability to park at my room door for loading and unloading purposes, if possible. Seems most now days require interior entrances, yes safer and with elevators but also with more people.

Any sugguestions.

After Hurricane Harvey, an old buddy coordinating some rebuilds on the NAS called asking for hotels for his guys. He could not find any. I told him try the Gateway Kitchenettes (SPID at Laguna Shores area).

He said the guys liked the hotel.

P.S. Do not go for the Plaza Hotel closeby to that location.

My dad has been a fan of the Motel 6 on Paul Jones Ave. for decades because of its close proximity to the island being a great "base camp" for our fishing excursions. As of recent, he too is suffering from lung and breathing issues, but still likes using them (even though I feel like the prices they are asking post-Harvey are a bit out of their class). I think they're doing about $65/night average right now, I'd expect that'll go up around July 4 time. But yes, it was shut down after Harvey for the longest time and it's been completely remodeled. Nothing fancy but a good base spot for out-of-town fishermen. They have all the amenities you mentioned though, and a small swimming pool for a quick cool off.

I don't know of anything on the island that doesn't want less than $125/night, a 2-3 min. stay during summer, or isn't a complete craphole.

However, if you're looking for something more Port Aransas and Mustang Island focused, our go-to place is Shark Reef. It's a nice place that is well maintained and is all about fishing crowds (boat parking all the way around the lot). It's on Cut Off Rd. close to the ferries. In walking distance of the channel/marina, close drive to Caldwell pier and the surf. They are usually pretty reasonable even during summer, and they have continental breakfast and a hot tub!

The Passport and another we say had lots of bedbug issues. Though those seemed to be older reviews but with same owners. Motel 6 no bedbug issues but roaches. I can live with that in separate beds (PTSD) I tend to try to kill anything that touches me when I sleep.....
La Quinta always good but much higher than sleeping in the truck.
I think I just need to invest in a pop up camper...........
