About a dozen fishers showed up for the Parks Board's meeting to exchange views and suggestions about Bob Hall Pier's status and rules. The Parks Board had rec'd copies of this message board's comments via email [Gib's work, I assume?] and several members read from them during the discussion.
Enforcement was a common theme. The county's cut of funding for island parks and their law enforcement personnel was mentioned several times by board members. At least one blamed the city police department's reluctance to make its presence known. Another mentioned trying to get TPWD's attention to issues regarding fishing regs on the pier. One fisher referred to repeated tries to get the Coast Guard to keep its own craft, much less those of civilians, from sailing too close to the end of the pier.
Other issues discussed included cast nets, rods/person, lighting, tarps, kayaking/diving from the pier, and an old cable snagging gear on the bottom on the right side of the pier.
The board expressed some confidence that the new pier operators will address the pier rule enforcement issue much more vigorously than the last ones, short of risking their own safety. They did mention that the new guys are large, physically intimidating individuals.
It was apparent at the meeting, as in the previous message board exchange, that there is a conlict over which specific limits different fishers want applied. This will require digging further for a consensus on this message board, as well as by the Parks Board.
The Parks Board thanked the fishers profusely for bringing these things to their attention, and urged everyone to keep the messages coming.
Tyler, please post a stickie for updates and additional discussion on the BHP rules, maintenance, and other issues that the Parks Board can review regularly. They really welcome the input.
The next meeting is currently scheduled for August 30 at 3:00 pm at the same location as today: the Padre Balli offices. To check on last-minute changes, call (361) 949-8121. I don't yet have an email addy for the Board, but perhaps by calling that number....?
Hey, I dropped all kinds of hints about a pre-meeting lunch at Laguna Reef, but only C.H. took me up on it. How about lunch there @ 1:00 pm, August 30? If you think the coconut shrimp basket is too small, you must not have ordered the onion rings as the side dish. If all else fails, order the plate - 8 shrimp and 2 sides. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!
