a buddy of mine caught what I beliee to be a sword spine snook... is this the same species as the mexican snook? when he showed me a photo of it, the anal fin was obviously different from snook that I've caught and seen. I couldn't find anything after spending a solid 4 minutes on the google about sword spines in texas though.

thought? feel free to move about the room and discuss

The two aren't the same species (Mexican and Swordspine), although they are pretty easy to distinguish. Swordspines are the smallest of all the snooks (just over a foot or so, max) and the anal fin goes past the base of the dorsal fin. Big scales too, on the Swordspine.

A picture would help out, as well as the general location that it was caught.

And deal with the potlickers???? Not today!

It was caught in the river. Between the spillway and nueces bay. I cant seem to get photos to post after photobucket cracked the whip on free posting. I just posted a pic of it to Tyler

That's why I put 'general location'... Unnamed Jetties, offshore, nondescript bay, river (like you mentioned - and that fits for that species). Wink

Becky is right about the 'highly unlikely', but I've gone way past the point of saying "NO WAY" to any catch that I hear about - See my Mola mola story from Nighthawk way back when!!!

Have got an occasional fat snook from trawls in that very same area over the years.

yeah, while it does have a long anal fin, it doesn't quite get past the base of the caudal as C.S. mentioned...plus it appears that the mouth extends to the middle of the eye, making it a fat snook....

some hybridization might occur, but genetic studies (like the one I helped with a few years ago) show that snook species are still distinct, even between east and west of the Mississippi....
