The weather around 9 pm was fantastic sitting around 80ish degrees and the wind between 5 to 10 mph sitting at the cosway pier but unfortunately the fishing was not as bumping as normal around that time. The water was flat and the current sure lacked movement. I was free lining and my shrimp would simply float in place as if it was to tired to fish. The fish were extra picky as well seeing as how I only saw a few fish caught during the time I was there. A nice 25 inch black drum was caught but after that a long period of hard head cats and dink trouts were all that were caught.
Pics from that night at cosway

Around 2 am I noticed that the skipjacks and gulls started to move in and the pier was pretty vacant so I decided to make my way to bobhall pier. I heard that the surf fishing had been quite excellent for the past couple of days, and thanks to another fisherman I was told they had got their limits on reds and trouts the previous night. Once at bobhall I asked the leaving fisherman if anything was biting and the only answer I got was "whiting". I continued ascending the ramp with wagon in tow still willing to test my luck against the ever persistent "whitings". Once up on the pier I did my scouting of each light post to see if I could spot any fish and wouldn't you know there were fish and I mean LOTS of fish swimming around the lights and up the coast line. The large schools were mainly trouts with spikjacks mixed in. So for time frame sake from 2 to 430 am the trouts were heavily feeding on live shrimp. I was surprised to hear that no one else was catching these guys. I met some pretty chill people while I was up there and 2 very generous people who gave me their live shrimps. Around 5am the bite dropped off completely and then the drums started to move in along with the larger than life mullets. I left around that time to grab some more bait and make my way to the packery channel were I did a few more casts before the sun got to intense. Packery had very beautiful water clarity and the puppy reds and pin fish were very busy stealing my bait.

Thank you for such a detailed report and great pictures. You sure don't give up and keep moving until you find the fish. I'll need to remember that.

I try my best to do as much detail for myself and others. I been keeping a fishing journal to make some type of connection or look for desired situations to optimize my fishing since I can't always make the drive down to the coast. I know plenty of others deal with that too. I will definitely hunt for fish like a blood hound till I get my quarry. The only thing holding me back is that I am mainly a night fisher, but I do try to gather information from weather, tide charts, word of mouth, moon patterns, and visual cues to have the best chance to catch fish.

Head hooked live shrimp on a drop shot rig can be super productive.
Just reel them in very slowly like a shrimp usually swims.
You can cover a lot of water that way and it is easier on the shrimp than jerking the heck out of them under a cork.

Awesome report, JB! You never give up. I was actually thinking about doing a popping cork and a DOA last night in the surf south of Bob Hall since they weren't into hitting on top. Maybe I will try that tonight. Thanks for the detailed report.
