Going to PINS this weekend and really want to focus using soft plastics for trout. First time using soft plastics. I have 1/4 and 1/2 oz jig heads at the moment, do I need heavier. Would like to try fishing the second gut in the afternoon. Forecast shows 20mph winds this Sat.

You want to use the lightest jighead possible. Most guys use 1/16 or 1/8oz. 1/4oz is your heavy jighead for trout.

True unless you have a ton of current.

Yes but I haven't got any yet. No luck a couple of weeks ago.

For what it is worth, I use 3/8oz jighead in the surf, never any lighter than 1/4oz for sure.

I'll put in a plug for Trout Support with a 1/8 oz weighted swimbait hook. They cast like a bullet, and easy to hold the column depth with a light twitch and take up the slack. Never tried them in the surf (just discovered them last fall), but I bet they'd be great. They naturally dog-walk, and act just like evading mullet.

One of these lures will cast farther than a cocahoe with 3/8 oz jighead.

Thank you all for the replies. I did catch a 20" spec on top water last weekend, early morning action. I am wanting to try different things in the surf while I have cut bait sittting on the bottom waiting.
