|

This season I want to tackle sun protection better than I have in the past on the sand and water. Relying on sunblock alone just doesnt cut it because I always end up washing it off or forgetting to reapply it. I have worn ball caps for years and they work fairly well in the front, but I always end up with burnt neck and shoulders.
So the way I see it there are 2-3 options and I wanted some user opinions on them.
#1: A better hat, meaning full coverage and full brim. But I would want one with a fairly stiff brim and one that wont fly off in our wonderful wind. Also it should breathe and be able to take saltwater well. Any suggestions?
#2: A face shield. I dont know much about them but I know theyve gained popularity in recent years. They look like they would cover all my concerned areas, but how well do they really work?
#3: Those clothes made of the same stuff as face shields. Do they work, where do you get them, how costly?
Im open to other input as well. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

Kinda depends on the time of day you're fishing. Large brimmed hats only work when the sun is mostly overhead. If it's at an angle eg: early morning/late afternoon, not so much. Face shields work very well and can be configured several different ways. The type of material they are made from doesn't really matter as even simple cotton shirts do a decent job of keeping UV rays off of you. Just know that face shields can feel a little constrictive and suffocating at first until you get used to them. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

That makes sense. Maybe a system of both then. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

As far as clothes go, I wear the simple, light and inexpensive Magellan Long sleeve shirts (they can be rolled up to be short sleeve) and long pants (the type than can be zipped off into shorts) and they work great. If you fish for extended periods of time, hold on to the sunscreen and don't neglect the forgotten parts of the body such as the backs of your hands and tops of your feet if you wear sandals or flip flops.
SHOPPERS TIP!!!
Such clothing items can be found at Good Wills, Salvation Armys and thrift stores for cheap! _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

If you're serious about full protection I think you will need a buff type product, the thing that keeps me from wearing it more is it fogs up my glasses when pulled over my nose. I have been meaning to try one that is vented at the mouth/nose area, any recommendations? I have experimented with the big hats but have yet to find a good option.
The last few Summers I have been using a big piece of white t-shirt that I can tie or wrap a variety of ways. It can work pretty well and you can't beat the price.
I'm great about sunblock before the trip but rarely remember to reapply. |

Try the vietnam type boonie hat and face sleeve combination. It's the best I have found. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

As someone who is fighting stage IV melanoma I go with the full coverup to include hands. Coolbar.com has items that are thin and cool but block the sun. I expose just my eyes most of the time. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

Wow, Sorry to hear that. I wish you a speedy recovery and full remission.
Full coverage is always the best option but I dont want anything too heavy or that will slow me down when wet. Sounds like this place might have just that, but are you sure about that address? I am not getting anything and I have tried it on a few browsers now. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

| Hat and faceshield both. The wife uses those arm/hand covers made of the same stuff. |

I use the hand cover also. I found the best ones are actually made for snow skiers because of the uv coming off the snow when it's sunny. Always long sleeve shirt no matter how hot. You can buy some really good "habitat" outdoor/fishing sunscreen long sleeve shirts at Sam's for about 15.00. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

I have ordered a set of 5 face shields from an advertiser on this forum (don't tell me they aren't scanning our posts LOL), so I look forward to trying those. I looked at Coolibar and they had some great stuff but nothing in big boy sizes. However I know a few places to get clothes of similar material in bigger sizes.
I am looking into all of your suggestions though, so thanks for the info. Once I have a style down, I bet I'm really going to like it. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

My favorite fishing shirt is an old worn out frayed Brooks Brothers dress shirt I have had for years. It got ragged and I had to give it a demotion (promotion!) from office apparel to fishing apparel and that's when i discovered its upside. Part of the reason I like it so much is that the collar is stiff and rides a lot higher than my magellan or columbia fishing shirts, so I have less trouble with sun on the back or sides of my neck. Plus its 100 percent cotton and feels a lot cooler to me than than those other shirts. Even with all their fancy vents those things feel like wearing a plastic bag to me.
Some people have no problem wearing those buffs and having them cover their mouth and nose, but it drives me bonkers. I always end up taking them off before the trip is over. I try to use good sunscreen (bullfrog) and keep a small bottle on a D-ring on my belt loop. Helps me remember, and its always there. _________________

I have one of those buffs and it bothers me, makes me hot etc. I have had a melanoma cancer removed from my ear. It is scary when the dr's office calls and tells you to come in the next day for a blood test and chest xray. Prayers to Mastergunner for a complete recovery. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
