These 2 were caught on Penn #9, 20 lb test, the rod, I still use today.

Back when I was young and pretty. This one was 66 lbs, caught at the Nueces River Park spillway in callalen. 1970, I believe.

This one was caught there at the callalen spillway too, 6 foot 4, 112 lbs. This one was printed in the Caller times, 1969 or 70.

As a youngster, fishing for these big alligator gar with light fishing gear - was our version of deep sea fishing.

Caught only one of these in my lifetime, fishing for drum off the NAS jetty. I was 12 or 13 years old. When that snout broke the water much excitement was had. Shocked

I fished for them with fly rods. My childhood fishing partner, when he moved away in 1970, left his dad's steelhead fly rod at my house. I played with it until I understood how it worked, sort of, along with a copy of field and stream in my back pocket. There was a place behind the dam up at mathis, where some large gar had gotten trapped. So I took that fly rod, instead of tying my own fly, ha ha, put a perch on it, and used that long rod to cast it over to the gar. Great fun, still have the rod, it is on a gun rack across the room from my desk here.
