I am going to get a kayak this year. I want to run shark baits in the surf and maybe fish BTB. I am 5'10 270lbs. I was at Academy and saw the Pelican The Catch 100, 10 foot kayak. Its rated for 350lbs and has rod holders. I see online they also make a 12 foot version with more storage. I dont know that it would be good in the surf, it doesnt have a large keel. I have also looked at the ocean kayak caper, frenzy and scrambler. I would like to not go to far over a $600-$700 budget. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

Don't get a pelican yak.
Look for a used scrambler or malibu 2.
At your size, the frenzy will be slow and sluggish in the surf (I know, I would use to borrow my friend's frenzy).

There are others, but this is just from my experience.

20 something years ago, we got into the kayak world, with a scrambler. It handled the surf very well, we used it a lot for running baits out -and for surfing - it was blast, decent stability etc. and I fished from it some. I am petite in the same category as you by the way. In those days, I didnt know about any other kayak brands other than Ocean Kayak - today, there are so many other choices. I am looking at a high dollar one with pedaling capability for a year or two from now. I think it will be great for me.

You have a tough job in deciding - the way I am going to decide when I get ready - is to go out to where they let you try them out and 'take em for a spin'. I have a few body parts that were replaced for warranty work - so i will have to try to see first if I can do this - but to me pedaling across and fishing so many places in the intercoastal would be a blast.

I agree with this. I use a scrambler to run baits and take BTB. It's not as fast or stable as some of the newer kayaks but it works well for what i want it to do. With a little work I am able to stand in mine in the flats and sight cast reds. I find for me the Malibu 2 is slower and heavier but I have run baits with it, taken it BTB and fished the flats and while it's more stable, it's not my favorite. I'm a smaller frame than you though so your results may vary. I have zero experience with any of the newer fancy pedal kayaks.

I am a little heavier than u...that being said...Malibu 2 or Malibu 2Xl. I have an Xl...taken it out in surf several times. Handles chop well and very stable. Dtr paddled it out alone into some nice surf when she was 10.

I have an offshore kayak you might be interested in around your budget. Running baits and going BTB are two different animals though. Usually the shorter kayaks fair better because they are easier to maneuver. Offshore you want a fine balance between stability and speed (designed for offshore), your body will appreciate it on the long run. PM me and I'll show you what I have Smile

Why not a Pelican? I looked up the Malibu two, I didnt realize you could sit in the middle of a tandem kayak. I think thats the one I want.

Lacking quality and craftsmanship. Cheap plastic, made in two prices, then stuck together (or at least used to be). Other main brands are rotomolded.

I think that's a good move. You can find them used, rigged ready to go for fairly cheap like under 400. Wind and wave will let you rent one or demo one to see if its really what you like. The advice is always try before you buy.

If you're in the corpus area...
https://corpuschristi.craigslist.org/spo/d/malibu-two-xl-kayak/6479818509.html

That's not the best deal ever but there's several Malibu two kayak ads on there right now. None are just too good to pass up. If you arent in a hurry keep looking and something real good will come along then jump on it.

Thank you guys so much. I Bought a used Malibu 2 XL about 6 weeks ago now. Just got to use it yesterday for the first time..... And its AWESOME! This thing take oncoming waves like a champ. If im a little sideways I dont flip over... I just get pushed back a little. I did flip on my first time coming back in.. but only once in 3 times going out. Did a practice run when i dumped but was able to run 2 baits out and had a run on the first... think it was a shark.. felt the head shakes. The second bait out got a huge sting ray. Pretty awesome day. Thank you guys again for the input. So happy with it.
