Question for you (just out of curiosity on my part). If you are coming all the way from Calallen, why go all the way onto PINS for an evening fishing trip of a couple of hours? The 8 mile stretch from Bob Hall to the north sticks is virtually identical to the first 10 miles or so of PINS (beach profile, dunes, guts, etc.). Past the Bowl is nearly vacant on a weekday, and it's FREE!!! Just seems like a long way to go.

But you are right - PINS is great, although I never even think of stopping until I get to 18+, or when the sound of the shells under my tires makes me smile. Very Happy

Years ago, back when Little Shell beach was a couple hundred yards wide above the high tide line and had a distinct drop-off just above that tide line, you could often catch one or two pomps within sight of the 4WD sign, but never a sustained bite. Before my wreck two years ago, like you, the first place I would stop for them is at the north end of Big Shell, in the 18-24 Mile
range. If several short moves didn't connect, then I'd move on down around the 30-33, near where for a while Coyote Pass, the northernmost washover pass, was. I'd seldom look for pomps beyond the 45. I wonder how much the conditions have changed since my last trip.

Yeah Donny, it impresses me how you will travel from Annaville all the way down Pins three or four times a week. But like CS said if you go south of Bob Hall 4- 5 miles you have the same conditions and you can spend a lot more time with your line in the water than you do driving. And this time of year at that time of day there are very few others out there . But everybody has their own little piece of paradise and yours seems to serve you well.

It just seemed to be more - isolated - but I should give that area a try, I know you guys do great there. Maybe its just coincidence, but seems like i catch hardhead more often when I try in there. It doesnt cost me anything , except time as you said, I have the OFP for pins, and being disabled , they gave me that free. That was a surprise. Originally, getting this leg in the water and getting a good work out three days a week was the goal, I had forgotten how much I like fishing down there.

On the other hand, down pins, I have become friends with a couple of herons, and thought i was friends with a coyote, but that sucker tried to steal my reds last wednesday, and was pretty persistent at it, so I have unfriended him now, as they say on fb.

I will try it more often. Probably headed out either this evening or in the early am. What do you guys think of conditions - hoping for reds of course, until this pomp thing happens.

And where is the Bowl?

Yep, thats the pass I have. I may have to get permission to go near there - my kids told me that I couldnt go near there - but now they are all grown, so maybe its ok now. A young people's place only. And as an obedient dad, I didnt. But I do intend to direct my grandchildren there.

with the new bollards and signs up its hardly the young people hang out it used to be. bunch of people tearing up the dunes ruined the bowl for lots of people

On my return to the island last year after a heartbreaking absence of a couple years, I was shocked - or as the lady said " you wont recognize the beach now" ! I just assumed it was a really high Bull tide period, but oh no , seems to be the norm now.

THE LADY !!! Shocked Hahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!

'Becky' is correct. The new normal is a very compact Big Shell, that has packed up and moved north, encroaching on Little Shell, and skinny-ness (if that's a word ???) for much of the southern end. Pretty much gone are the High Banks and big drop-offs. It's 'different', but I still like it.

Donnie, the Bowl was the epic party location back in the 70's & 80's (just like 2 miles South of the Bowl used to be the Nude Beach - which morphed into the Gay Beach), but 4WDs recently got 'out of hand' and They closed it off. Jeeps and 4WDs weren't as plentiful back then. [Which makes no sense really, because everybody knew that was where you went, so it was confined to a relatively small area]. But I digress. I for one, am shocked at just how quickly the vegetation reclaimed those dunes. But it is a natural feature, a blow-out or wash-over pass. Sorta like a pressure release value for the Island when a storm comes in. It gives way first. They can be found all up and down the Island in various sizes. Think Newport Pass, here close to home. Same sort of wide, open area with little vegetation.

Give the upper part of the Island a try, if you want to shorten your drive one day. I personally like Marker 268-298 area the best. I think you will find conditions are pretty similar to upper PINS, and I have done well in that area. From beachcombing, to bird watching, to catching (which is even better than fishing!! Laughing )

I agree - love the catching - a great feeling is being there - no vehicles in sight in either direction - and fish on and running - drag is going out - pulling me down the beach - no video camera on my head - just freaking great memories of what it felt like and the sound of the line going out. Too bad it was just a large sting ray - still a blast. I should be there right now but leg is acting up and I better not push it right now. But then....

Referring to Marker 268-298 , is that south of BHP, between the pier and the north sticks ?

Yes, roughly 5 miles south of Access Rd. 6. After 252 (I think that where it starts), the County put in the 'Forest' of mile markers, one every 1/10th of a mile. Can't miss them. Shocked

SwellInfo has stuck to its forecast of flat surf tomorrow before the south winds strengthen. Longer-term forecast predicting another window on Saturday.

Please post surf and driving conditions actually encountered on PINS today.

Driving conditions are ideal. Surf was very dirty still today. I could have gotten the yak out past the breakers to the green water but I had to leave and I was with my 5 year old son so I wouldn't have tried to yak past the breakers anyway. He can't swim well enough yet to risk dumping the yak. The green water was less than a quarter mile out at some points.

Stopped to fish, casting from the bank, at around PINS MPs 18. 33, and 43. Using FishnStrips and dead shrimp, caught only small bay and surf whiting, plus a single small skippy on the last cast. Would have cut up the last to try for reds, but my two companions had to get back to Beeville, so we turned back before 1300 and cleaned less than a quart of whiting fillets for them at Billings.

Water was decidedly murky at the end of pavement, but gradually cleared the farther south we went. Saw one guy cast up finger mullet, and two birds catch others, and there were increasing numbers of brown pelicans diving in the first gut as we drove south. Wind was almost calm at first, but had advanced from the southeast to the point of blowing off hats on the way back. Waves were less than a foot high, and the tide was low all day. North of the 4WD sign, folks were getting bay algae build-ups on their lines, but I got none where I stopped, and saw none at the high tide line.

Beach was super smooth, and did not truly test the Forester, which averaged 31.5 mpg on the sand.
