Originally had planned on going out tomorrow and the tournament I was scheduled the referee in Bishop was moved to Thursday because of the hurricane. About 1 went out today and wound up with a limit of trout using my Tequila Gold sand eels. After that I decided to play around with Some of Trout Supports baits that he sent me. They work real well. I found a small gut south of Pita and experimented. Made 15 casts with bone color TS lure, a Tequila Gold sand eel and a chicken on the Chain TS lure. I wish he had a color similar to Tequila Gold. Would have been interesting to see what happened compared to the two side-by-side The bone and the Tequila Gold caught about the same amount of fish seven each. Whereas the chicken on a chain only caught two trout. However on the way back I drifted the flats at my two minute honey hole and the chicken on a chain, which was rigged weedless weightless, hooked into a 26-inch redfish. When I got home got a message that tomorrow's tournament is cancelled also because of the hurricane and teams coming from out of town don't want to risk putting their players In Harm's Way. Totally understand

| Nice! Ive been eye balling the Trout Support lures as well and checked out his videos online for rigging them. I think he posted that he would be having some new colors coming out. I have seen a pink one in some of his photos. I have read lots of good reviews of his lures. I need to order some myself. |

| I got these fish not even using recommended hook. If I ever rig it properly who knows how many fish I'd catch off it. We'll need to try that next time out. |

Ok Zia, good going, as usual. I've been trying those lures out myself with some success rigging with the suggested hooks. But have missed some good hits too, had them hold on, pull drag, and let go. But probably my doing. Tobin made another video showing to just barely stick hook point or not at all, and reel till tight and then give a good yank to set hook. Think I've been sticking too much point in plastic and not putting enough whammy on hook set. Looks like you were using weedless hook type with bail that covers hook point. Maybe you got something there. Actually this is my first time trying weedless rigging, so fumbling a bit. But really liking the weedless part for the shallow flats and floating grass. D |

Good Stuff Zia...
and good points DMac. yes, with weedless baits of any sort, you have to reel down, take out slack, and give them a full power stroke. Many times with jig heads we are used to a little shot quick hook set and we have a super loose drag because of the age old idea that the drag should be super loose for trout with that weak skin. But with these hooks they hook through bone and cartilage.. so for the hook set I'll either thumb down for the hookset or tighten my drag for the hook set. These hooks by design will hook in corner of mouth or usually though something big like a lower lip.. on rare rare occasion it might still get a little thin top of mouth, but honestly I can't remember a time when that's happened since i started shaping the hook. Reel down, set the hook hard with full power stroke, then back off drag etc. I've gotten good reports of guys not having any problems with hook ratio after they switch to that method.. and that's with almost all weedless rigged baits.
Zia.. what are you liking about the bait and what are your dislikes just be honest. Are there things that you like about them compared to other lures. |

and for all, here's the latest you tube.. most of you can already walk the dog with subsurface twitch baits and this reviews that and covers things like what might be different from fishin a weedless rigged bait.

| One thing I really like about these baits is that they are tough. The won't get torn apart by a couple bites from perch like other soft plastics. I caught several nice size trout and a Red on one without having to change them out. That's also what I like about the Norton sand eels. Personally I need to learn how to rig them differently. I have been very successful catching fish by bouncing my lures off the bottom using a regular jig head. I am not convinced that walking the dog what catches many fish.. Might have to give it a try this if that will work. I need to find the right Hooks and learn how to rig them up as suggested |

Exactly my thoughts too, Z. They're just right toughness and rigging with the keeper hooks not only makes them almost completely weed less but helps keep the bait from getting torn up. The weighted hooks ought to be good for bouncing the bottom. |

| Speaking of sand eels, one of those reds we caught Monday had a golf ball size wad of little fresh eels in his belly. Don't think I've ever seen them like that before. D |

I really like them and have had great success with them and will never be without them in my box.
I wish they were tougher. If I use a z-shank worm hook, they tear up after a fish or two, but they are more weedless and my hookup ratio is better than with screwlock worm hooks which allow the lures to catch 10 or twenty fish instead of 2.
I'd like to have a larger size option. Maybe a smaller option, also.
Why is the belly color lighter on chicken on a chain and the back lighter on bone diamond?
The bigger the hook, the better they work. That said, the hook pocket is a hair too short for the best hooks. Just 1/4" longer would be great.
Even with these few criticisms, this is a lure I completely believe in and is everything I was looking for in a soft plastic.
Thanks for the effort you put into this great lure. _________________ Take it outside! |
