Anyone know a hotspot to catch edible size Blue Crabs by family with nets?

No crab pro here, but have crabbed a lot over my years. The surf, and channels are two of the best concentrated areas, but you can't simply use a net. At least I have always had to use bait (chicken necks,etc.) on a string of some length to find and catch the crabs. In the surf you can put sticks(pvc poles) in the sand and put the baited string out 25' or so and wait until the crab tightens the string, then you just easily pull the crab to you and net him. The legal size is 5" tip to tip, and require a fishing license. Good luck.

You can also just walk the beach at night. Wear a good headlight and carry a big dip net or landing net, and ease either direction (up or down) the surfline, in ankle deep water. Sometimes there will be nice crabs as thick as fleas. Just dip one, dip another, and keep doing this until you can't handle anymore in the net. I've DONE it, and it was the fastest, easiest, most fun crabing experience ever!

I used a big landing net, the kind you take on a boat. They are deep enough and large enough that you can turn the handle 180 degrees after catching a crab, or more crabs, and the net going up, over and around the hoop keeps them locked in. Give it a good hard shake before reversing the 180 to dip another crab, and any that were climbing the sides will fall back to the bottom.

Is there a particular time of the month or year that is best for walking the beach, such as full moon vs a new moon?

Bayfly, I couldn't really say. Only did it once while camping on the Island for a couple of weeks way back around 1974, and around this time of year. All I can add is that the water was really warm, and I was stupified by how many really nice crabs were in the surf! The water wasn't super clear, but I could easily see 2' deep, and the surf was average for down there.

It was an accident.... I was walking down the beach (Whitecap) late one night with a flashlight, just beachcombng without the mob. Not long after I started my walk, I shined the light out into the water, and there was a big crab swimming by. Thought it might just be an anomaly, but I kept seeing them everywhere. Went back to my VW bus (Dooooood 😎) and got the landing net, and the rest is history. Had enough crabs to fill a BIG pot in less than 45 minutes!🤙 In all honesty..... I ate so much freaking crab that night that I couldn't face one again for a LOOOOONG time after, but it was just my buddy and I, and I didn't want to waste all those crabs, so I took one for the team and kept picking and eating!

My gosh! Can't wait to get down on the beach.

I will be visiting for a few weeks at the Navy base at Corpus Christi in my RV and had a few questions.

I do know I will need a Non-resident licease to just catch crab in the inner water areas only. Depending on the cost all I see is the daily ($11) or annual licenses ($40).
Does this sound correct?


I also wanted to ask if you can crab at night with a light as I have seen a few do online in videos. I only plan to crab with a bait line from the shore.

I usually like low tide to catch crab. What's your liking?

Does Blue Crab have a season?
