another mixed bag at port a. first 3 cast - 20" flounder , 10" mangrove and a 15" snook. after a few more hook ups with snapper i got lucky with a 24" snook. thing is half the size of the rock i was on. Both snook were released but the flounder and 1 unlucky snapper are dinner . not great pic s but here they are

I'd have kept that 24" (legal) snook and flounder for supper myself. Wouldn't give you a plugged nickle for all the snapper on the planet when it comes to tablefare! The other two are up there with as good as it gets!
To each their own though..... I still don't get how snapper became so popular as food....
By the way, congrats on the snook!!! I'm 0 for 1 on them; had one about 26-28" long come smoking out from under a bridge peir at Sebastian Inlet a few years ago, going after the live bait that I dropped into there, straight down off the catwalk. It was hauling the mail, and I only had pressure for maybe 1 second before it was gone from my life......... _________________ Dave

| Id love to have eaten that snook lol but im hoping if we keep releasing them for the next 5-10 years we will have a better snook fishery and i can take 2 home to cook. one of the guys spear fishing told me he saw more snook down there than any other fish today. Maybe we are halfway there. |

Your sentiment is commendable, but Snook DIE in cold water, and the Corpus area is prone to the same "Mantitoba Maulers" that we get up here in Arkansas, just a day later. It doesn't have to get below freezing either; just a few days of a howling nothern can drop the water temp rapidly, AND reverse the current on the islands, sending killing water temps streaming down to PI!!!
See here: http://myfwc.com/research/saltwater/fish/snook/winter-2000-2001-freezes/
So, enjoy a meal of snook, because one big cold snap and that's it for a few years!

My wife caught a 24 in. snook a few years back and we released it for the same reason. Hoped it would migrate south in the winter and then come back with several more the next year. |

A side note on snook: Just because very few people catch them, and fewer catch keepers, they can still be pretty thick in spots. They like cover like Mangrove roots and deep holes/washouts, like at the tips of jetties and around bridge footing, etc. I remember CS posting that he's seen scads of them while snorkeling such places down there.
It's the same old song, different verse; unless you fish close to or in the cover, you won't get the results. Losing tackle is part of the price.... _________________ Dave

| That's what I was telling anyone would listen. If you cast 30 yards and catch nothing, then 50 yards and catch nothing don't try going for 70 yards. Fish the rocks. I went for redfish but you could tell off the bat they were not ready to bite. So I switched to snapper and whatever hides in the rocks. and I'll keep that snook next time and cook him right. |

A very small contribution is the least that I can do!
By the way; you may be OSOFARAWAY, but I'm another 300+ miles farther from Corpus Christi than you!!!!! _________________ Dave
