|
|
Hey yall! It's been well over a year since my last report. Lots of changes this past year in life and in my fishing. 2016 was a phenomenal year as my last few months in corpus came to a close. There were 7 tournament wins and a dozen paychecks for various categories (reds, trout, flounder). I brought the momentum up north with 1st place Bass and 3rd place Striped bass at the Red River Rivalry on Lake Texoma. The fishing was pretty insane all year long and I CRUSHED my previous baffin trout catches. Not in size but in numbers with 100+ trout 20" and up caught for each month Feb-July.
In July I moved up to Dallas and started trying to learn the whole freshwater fishing thing. It doesn't take much of a learning curve to start catching a few. Texoma was home for the first few weeks and it was greeeeat! Striped bass were blowing up topwaters for most of the fall. Winter came around and I changed up my plan of attack to target some trophy smallmouth. Didnt take long to get a C&R water body record under my belt.
Now we are FINALLY in april! I haven't had too many chances to visit the coast so I've had to make my trips count. I asked around about how the bite has been and the report wasnt good coming out of baffin. I knew I would have to adapt to make it happen, especially with these spring winds. Blackdrum havent really been running to hard this year in baffin. I've found a few in shallow water but they arent as thick as past years.
My dad finally wanted to get a fishing trip going on the KR so we loaded up the kayak and brought some family to have a overnight fishing trip in Alazan.
We set up drum rods and I wandered into a backlake full of grass. Kayakign in 30mph winds on baffin is not how I prefer to kayak but its the hand I was dealt. The backlake was full of grass and a canal that bait was getting trapped in. I Immediately spot several redfish with their backs out. I crab walked my kayak the length of the backlake sightcasting catching 15 redfish and losing a dozen. The grass was soo thick and wind soo tough that I had to weedless rig a paddle tail with a 3/8 tungsten weight. Light wire bass hooks arent the best to hold onto a redfish but they work half the time.
I kept my 3 and made my way back to the camp spot where it was still slow goings for the others. The winds slowed down and the water started to drop a bit. The backlake started to empty and the bite turned on! Drum and Redfish were picking up the fishbites for 2 or 3 hours. The wind picked back up around 2 or 3 AM and I migrated back to the back lake. Redfish and now drum had moved back in and were easy pickings. We ended our trip in the early morning hours with a nice little meat haul thatll hold me over until my next trip down.
Now I'm back in Dallas trying to qualify for KBF National Championship with a online tournament. Trying to win it while fishing White rock lake. If your not familiar with it then its not really a "Big bass" lake and is really tough fishing, but I'm making it work the best I can. It also has a few white bass in it. I say a few because poachers running nets across the creeks during the run have demolished the population. Strangely enough I came across these poachers saturday morning and I hope the game warden found them.
If you do find a white bass its going to be a biggun. I've managed to tie the lake record for white bass, and make catch a C&R record largemouth this week. Hopefully itll keep up this week.
Hoping I can make another trip down soon. This is usually the best time to be fishing baffin and its killing me that I can't be there casting big baits. I will say that not having to clean your gear every trip is a huge huge plus! Salt is not coool! See yall soon.
TIll next time

Tino,
Just last week I was wondering where you had escaped to.
Good to hear you have mastered the freshwater as well as keeping your saltwater skills (from pictures and report of your last trip).
You always have provided excellent reports.... _________________

| Man, wish I could fish a tenth as good as you. I struggle and always wonder how you do it. Thought that fresh water would bring a new angle but you excel there as well. Wish I knew how so I could teach my son properly. |

Good to see you haven't lost your night fishing skills! Awesome job learning the ropes on the freshwater. Haven't fished fresh in years! The old night fishing spot is still giving up a few |
