Headed up to Northern New Mexico/Southern Colorado to fish the Rio De Los Pinos this morning. Got there and the river was frozen. Came back and fish the Rio Grande just south of Taos. Used flies at various depths and could not get a bite. worked various holes and different flies nothing. Finally put a split shot on the combination I was using and it was fish after fish after fish. I guess that's split shot got it down to just the right depth. Sure is a lot different than fishing saltwater. Caught about 12 to 15 trout when I finally found them. On the way out of the gorge came across a flock of 18 bighorn sheep. The little white dots in the picture are all their butts while they're feeding. All in all a pretty great day
Tomorrow I'm going to fish the Rio Grande North of Taos targeting northern pike. I'm also going to soak in the natural Hot Springs that's adjacent to the river that was in a scene of the movie Easy Rider |

Well I hit the Rio Grande North is Taos this morning in search of northern pike. Found a couple pools that looked promising but no pike to be found. Being it was pretty chilly out this morning I took a short 1/4 mile hike to the hot Springs and took a nice 30 minute soak.
After soaking I switched flies in search for trout of which I successful catching 5. Amazing part of the day was all the big horn sheep that were around. I counted 39 before leaving the Gorge to head home. |

| I really like fishing for fresh water trout, try using a small floating gold Rapala, they tend to just take a fly, they attack a crank bait. You should try coming to Sattler and fishing the Guadalupe, I caught a 24"er a few years ago. |

I was able to catch some on a lure called a Joe's Fly. For lack of a better description, it is a spinner bait fly. I was wanting to get some on flies. Had to experiment with depth, weight and size, and type. After that it was finding the right presentation.
Here is a pic of a rainbow with a Joe's fly. Hard to see lure real well.
