Last Saturday was ugly in the surf zone, but I had just wrapped up a successful (but very stressful) accreditation site visit with my college program and I was going fishing, one way or another. I drove down to PINS and unloaded, but that surf was giving me the stink-eye. At the third bar I found the largest waves of the set, and they towered at least a foot above my head as I slammed through them ...but I REALLY needed to get out and fish for a while, lol.

At the rig, I found snapper, jacks, kings and big spanish, and after a while I also hooked a tank of a cobia that measured 48 inches and had lots of bad attitude. Then I caught and trolled an 18" live blue runner around for a while and found a second cobia. This one was a true beast at 53 inches, and it put up a great fight, forcing me to chase it around the rig to avoid being cut off on the barnacles. I kept up with the fish and led it away from the dangerous structure, and finally got it aboard to end a great day of solo fishing.

The surf back at the beach was not so generous, and the first time it rolled me, Davey Jones stole my little spinning rod outfit. Then I got rolled a second time - because sometimes nature is mean like that, and I lost that beautiful big cobia that had been roped to the kayak because there was no other place to keep it. It was a rough way to come back ashore, but overall the experience was unforgettable. I sure got rid of the stress of an accreditation visit, and still had lots of fish to share with folks from church. Here's the video but remember: I don't beat cobias because I like to. I do it because they are flat out dangerous if they are brought into the kayak while awake. Enjoy!

So that WAS your truck and trailer. I was wondering. We passed it on the way to the 25mm but you were gone when we came back. Thought you had to be around the rig so I climbed a dune with binoculars but could not spot you.

Lol, I was out there somewhere, but I rarely tie onto a rig. I'm usually trolling around the area looking for another fish.

How did you guys do?

Wow! I am too old for that but glad you got back safe and sound without those gifts to Davey Jones.

Nice fish and video. Glad you didn't get hurt coming in through that rough surf.
