Mary and I got to sbh this morning about 7:30. Put out one pole with a pomp rig using fishbites and shrimp. Set the other two rods up with my redfish rigs. 1 had cut skipjack the other with and live mullet. The 2 redfish poles did not get a bite for the first hour or so whereas the other one was non stop pomp action. After catching 8 for dinner I decided to switch and put all of redfish rigs out. One of my poles wound up getting hit real hard bent over in half and then nothing . When I bring it in my hundred fifty pound leader was sliced in two losing my hook and my stainless steel spider weight. I retie on a new rig and cast out and one next to it goes off .I bring it in and it was a nice 29 inch smack. But much to my surprise there was a second hook in it with a finger mullet and it was the one on my first rod that was cut off.
I get all three rods set up again with live finger mullet and before I can sit down the middle road goes bent over. Bring in a nice 24-inch Spanish Mac. Before I can unhook it the first Rod gets a bite so I run out there and grab it and bring in the second Spanish mackerel. Here I am with 2 on the sand and my third rod goes off. I go bring in another smack. A triple hook up, hence the triple smackdown.
Had a blast out there today catching 11 smacks, 8 pomps but not one red. By 11 o'clock it got too hot to stay out there so we came back in |

| Okay question! I brought a couple smacks home to have for dinner. How are they as table fare? Best way to prepare. I filleted them, cut out the small bones down the middle of the fillets and cut out the bloodline. the meat seems rather soft. I was wondering if I should try cooking it or just finding a cat |

It's outstanding table fare, one of my favorites. I usually grill it with the skin on, but it's great fried too...or a healthy route, baked in the oven with veggies. _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

| Wow, that's sumthin. Guess mullet con hook was so good he wanted seconds. Was out a couple weeks ago catching skipjacks by the dozen and the smacks came through, my 20lb fluorocarbon didn't even slow one down. Went and tied on another leader, another spoon, first cast there goes my last spoon. They got razors. |

Should have stopped. Especially if it was during my triple. Could have used the help. |

| Awesome report Zia. I kept a smack a few weeks ago and covered the fillets in Panko bread crumbs and baked it, which came out pretty good. I think they're some of the coolest looking fish. I'm super jealous about the pomps though! |

| Just cooked some pomps for dinner and added a smack fillet to try it. Both were great. All I did was salt and pepper the fillets and sauteed them in butter. I then made a sauce in the same pan with minced red onion, mushrooms, garlic, white wine, lemon curd and some more butter. Tasted great with and without the sauce |

Great catch Zia! I have used smaller smacks for ceviche. Never caught any that size so don't know how that would work. |
