Caught while cast netting mullet along Laguna Shores. Not what I expected to see out there at all, but it goes to show how tough these fish are and why they have spread into so many water bodies. The fish was eviscerated and left on the bank, as per Texas law. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Tilapia. I thought Mangrove when I was pulling the net in, but upon further inspection, the true identity became clear. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

yeah, they can and do live easily in brackish water.....they really are tough, invasive species....

they are extremely invasive, and yes, they have already been known to push out native species like largemouth bass in the environment...have no idea what they'll do in our brackish/saltwater environment, but it can't be good...

the crappy part is that salt tolerance (like most traits) can be hereditary in Tilapia, that is, tilapia from salt-tolerant parents are more likely to be salt-tolerant. The other bad news is that people are intentionally breeding them that way.
TD, I'm interested in what the salinity was where you got it off laguna shores. Any idea? The laguna madre isn't exactly a brackish rivermouth! Also, is that O. mozambica or a different species. If I recall correctly (and I might not), the most common one we would get in the fish class surveys of the lower Nueces was O. aureus, the blue tilapia, which is less salt tolerant. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

| The Salton Sea in California is almost twice as salty as the pacific ocean. Tilapia still survive there. |

I caught them in one of the drainages from the neighborhoods into the Laguna. No idea on salinity but it was salty enough to burn my eyes when I got water in them. Not sure on species. I assumed O. mozambica, but didn't actually look into further. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

So what is the down side ? Do they take over and eat everything? I meant to ask you that the other night. Are they a bad thing ? Educate us. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

They compete with native wildlife for resources. Not sure how this applies specifically to the ones living near the Laguna, but in freshwater systems the negative effects are well documented. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |
