So i changed my hooks from trebles to j hooks for the first time. This morning i missed about 5 reds that hit my lure. Is that whats to be expected or do i need to fish it differently? Also had several misses on the fly rod as well on a topwater popper fly. Maybe just a day of short strikes?

I keep trebles on my top waters never had a whole lot of luck with single hooks never did like them. I do change the trebles to a better and stronger brand. It's all in the metal. There may be others that say different. Then again it may be one of those hit but miss days. Look foward to your next report.

Where do you find water without tons of floating grass that you were able to throw top Waters? I haven't been able to find any anywhere

I rigged some topwaters up this spring with j hooks in the back, not so much for grass, but because the trebles kept bending, even with relatively light drag.

I found that about 75% of the time, I was hooking the fish on the front hook that was still a treble hook. I missed a ton of fish just putting a j hook in the back ring.

if there's that much grass, I just throw a weedless soft plastic.

I was in the shamrock cove area. Lots of people were going right by us. But we found good conditions and fish. We've been throwing topwaters for weeks. I'm probably going to eventually go back to trebles. Where we were the concern wasnt grass, just didnt wanna deal with treble hooks but seems like hook up ratios going down is the concensus from what I've read. I'll give it a few more tries and see what happens.

I always replace my hooks right out of the box on my topwaters. I use heavier hooks and rings. I like my lures to sit a certain way in the water. I guess you can say I tune em.

Recently switch over to singles(bout a year)...Rigged as pictured, kinda a PIA, but worth it IMO, lets chance of accidents for noob's, especially in the close quarter battles in a yak...

No probs so far, very happy on this end...

I am assuming you are doing this for C and R. If so, do what is required on C and R trout streams and go barbless on your trebles.

X2! Yesterday afternoon the grass was insane on the laguna. Lures were pointless.

There is s reason why the manufacturer sells them with trebles instead of singles. Wink

I'm doing it so i dont have to deal with three hooks in an undersized reds mouth that tried to engulf my topwater. It was a pain. I dont mind keeping legal sized, but i hate when a release takes longer than it should because trebles are sticking everywhere. Maybe I'm just secong guessing it now because while i was removing said hook, my pliers broke and i ended up having to get it out with my hands. Not fun, but got it done in time for a successful release. Thats why i changed my hooks. But if i cant catch ANY fish i guess risk is worth reward.

as soon as I buy just about any lure the trebles come off and singles go on. front one facing forward and rear facing back. I seem to hook just as many with the rear as the front and never have noticed any difference in hookups. I try to size mine that the gap on the single is the same width as the whole treble.

Love the pics from Kingz. Was fishing a bone S Jr just like it Saturday and the reds really committed to eating. The trout were just slapping at it, but they will do that when there are six barbs too.

Don't have to worry about so many hooks to handle. Never had a single hook straighten like the trebles do. They are not weedless but pick up less grass.

I have changed out hooks on many of my bass topwater plugs. Don't like gangs of trebles everywhere when I am wading or kayak fishing the creek here. I have noticed no decline in my hookup ratio and there is a lot less worry. I rig them as others have mentioned.
