What is the best shade for the surf? I am tired of those pop up shades, any pics of your set up if you have any would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Have been toying with the idea of using a tarp off my shark rack. Still thinking about all the details before i start building though. Might be better off with camo netting than a tarp. I'm really interested in this thread though so hopefully someone else will chime in!

Made a wooden frame for the bed of my pick-up that I can do various types of shade depending on how I mount the tarps. Made a post about this a couple of months ago.

Army camoflage net poles. They come in 4' pieces. I assemble two 16' sections together and place them on the roof racks of both vehicles and pull the tarp tight with 5-gallon buckets or water. It's tall enough to duck under and really does not flap around a lot.

If you had only one vehicle i'm thinking you would add another section of pole and make a lean-to off the side of it.

Those of you thinking camoflage netting might want to try before you buy it first. Stuff is really not all that great at producing shade,comes in odd shapes, does not stop wind at all and is a bear to put up. It tangles on EVERYTHING.

I have a military camo net, it's awesome. It's a big diamond, tie it up between two trucks, two tpost from and back, one section of poles in middle. Takes less than 5 min and doesn't get torn up or loud in the wind.

texastactical my biggest complaint is that i have had to replace them just about every year, they don't hold up to the wind very well and they price the replacement arms like if they would rather you just buy a new one. I've had two fly away on me and they are heavy enough to when they fly you just wait til it falls DO NOT try to stop it in mid air. Last but not least I went to the beach last week and and as I tried to set one up the legs would not open I was able to get two down but the third would not budge and as windy at it was I did not want to rig that leg and risk it flying away and hurting someone.

The screen shades work great. The web link I posted offers these if a large array of filter densities, widths, grommet placements, reinforcement hems, and lengths. They even have some color options limited to certain densities. For frames you can run std pcs fittings ( run a pipe clamp near the ends of all of them to prevent split out with a wind gust)but run Sch.80 pipe. They will take any beating you can throw at them. When you have had a couple beach outings out of them. Lay them out in the yard when you get home and put a sprinkler on top of them for an hour. This washes all of the sand and salt out of them. let them dry and roll them back up.

Are you using the 10 footers or the 12 footers? In my experience the 12 footers are just to weak for the wind. How are you anchoring them?

We have had very good luck using the pop ups next to the water. We go down a couple of times a year and spend 10 days on the beach. We set up 2 ten footers side by side. they give each other mutual support. I also bury a deadman anchor that points directly into the prevailing winds.

This stays up for 10 days at a time. I have one that has about 9 years worth of these trips on it.
