Tyler and all,
How far can you all cast just standing at water's edge and casting from the beach, or do y'all do that? Is it a successful approach or do I have to get my line out farther? In learning, I have been able to cast 50 to 80 or 90 yards which was, to me, a long way, but I realize that is reelative (mistyped, reread and saw the mistake, but it was so corny I left it just for fun), and you all may place it much farther with a similar cast. Can I get my bait out far enough just from the beach to catch decent fish? Or, do I need to try to kayak it out, something I have never tried but read about here. A few perils there it seems!!!!
What are the best baits to use, live, cut or lures? I am willing to try them all and/or mix them up, whatever it takes, but don't know which are good.
I appreciate your suggestions and advice!
Thanks,
Ray _________________ Ray |

Ray, you must reelize (taking your cue) that the fish, like people, have their preferences and their limitations.
My Dad, for example, had arthritis problems that made it difficult to hold a pole, much less to cast to the second gut, so he fished just past the drop off into the first gut, to which he could easily lob fore- or back-handed with a spinning rod that even I found nearly impossible to reach the second gut with, even when I waded out with it. Most of the time, he stuck the rod butt in the rodholder on the front of the Blazer and sat back until the very flexible pole doubled over.
Now, picture this. My fishing buddy C.H. and I would slog back and forth through the wade gut pitching our hearts out with two long poles each and catching the majority of the pompano, while Dad with his feet dry and not even holding his rod caught almost all the redfish and half the whiting. We all used the same bait and terminal tackle, so all that differed was where the sinkers landed.
Check out the habits of the fish you're after, and consider the lengths (pun intended) to which you're willing to go before you invest in gear. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

We have seen it too many times when one guy who is casting way past everyone else seems to pick up more and often bigger Pompano. Some will say yeah but I catch most of my fish in the first gut or wade gut. The smart strategy is to fish long, medium range, and in close to see where the fish are. The one thing the guy whose gear doesn't allow for big long casts may be missing the fish at long distance. At least if you have long distance gear you can always fish in close too!
We catch blacktip sharks and Jacks in the first gut too so you don't necessarily need a kayak to put your bait out unless you want to catch the larger sharks. You do tend to get more sharks with say a whole whiting yaked out into the second or third gut. Even the best casting rods such as the Breakaways can't sling a pound whiting and a spider weight. |

Fished way too many times where the baitfish and birds working thme were just outta casting range, many times out of casting range from the second bar. Yes, I catch alot of fish in the wade, first and second guts, but there were many days when I couldn't cast very far, when the guy next me on the beach could, and they outfished me, catching more and larger fish. I got tired of it.
I bought a 12' spinning reel/rod combo and learned the OTG and then a modified pendulum cast. Now no fish are outta range.
To answer your first question, let me define the guts bars.
From the beach at mean tide:
wade gut,
first bar
first gut
second bar
second gut
third bar
thrid gut or gulf of mexico / depending on beach structure
sometimes in some areas, fourth bar, then gulf of mexico
Far end of the second gut from the beach is easy. Can put it in the thrid gut from first bar most days with medium sized baits. Thrid gut from second bar if using heavy baits. _________________ GOBZA!!!
