Thanks to all that responded with your advice. It is much appreciated.
I went down to talk to Nick at Breakaway today. I did not think I could fit one of his rods into my budget, but he made me a deal I could not refuse. I ended up with a Daiwa Sealine 20XSHA reel and a Breakaway L-DX 13 ft and stayed within my budget. Can't wait to get out there later today and give it a try.
I am going to add a spinning surf rig as well down the line. |

found an LDX (like new, maybe never used) on ebay a few yrs ago for 130....
and a 6500 abu rocket CT (new) for 120...
sometimes Acadamy runs a sale on returns, too..
found an 8' Castaway and an Abu 7000 for 40bux each!
if you go with spinning... buy Nick's cannon...
it's worth every cent...
cast a heavy sinker w/a properly set drag and NO cut fingers...
a must w/braid.
Nick also has all the stuff to make custom leaders to YOUR fancy...
and the Quick Links are SO handy...
I still have a few of Dig-on-Me's custom leaders and they work great..(Breakaway stuff). and also use JReb's "tourist" leaders for whiting... and reds and small shark, too! |

Excellent choices there sir! An amazing rod and a great reel.
I know it can be tempting to go with the heavier HDX but it can be difficult to throw. The LDX is much more castable.
Next thing to do is to start practicing the different casting styles (Did you pick up a DVD? ) After awhile, you'll be amazed at how far you can throw without getting your toes wet.
PS: The leaders that Nick carries, the far out mono rig and the double clip-down rig, also aid in gaining distance. Keeps your bait(s) from flailing in the wind and slowing things down. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

Yep good choice! By the way the SFCCI will be holding the Jerry Valentine Long Distance Casting Tournament tomorrow in Kingsville. There will be guys casting 150 gram sinkers in excess of 750 feet. Richard Kleberg park in Kingsville very close to the old jet display you can see from the highway. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| I went out SBH to give the new rig a shot. Fished just north of the sticks. Really it was not that serious of a fishing outing today. I mainly wanted to try out the new rig, and practice casting it. I must say that I'm very pleased with the new LD- X rod and the Sealine reel. There is no doubt that with practice it will cast a mile. I had no problem with backlash. The problem was accuracy. I was practicing the pendulum cast, and I had a problem with direction more than anything. I tended to cast too far to the right of my target. With practice, I'm sure I will straighten that out. I did manage one bull whiting, actually one of the biggest I have caught. Looking forward to many more surf fishing adventures. |

Daiwa Sealine 20 SHA with 200 yards of 40 lb braid, topped off with some 12 or 15 lb mono, correct leader, on a quality 11-12' rod will let you reach pomps, has enough oomph to deal with big reds and jacks.
the 20 is the longest casting reel for the money.

| I miss surf fishing in the winter. Build a big camp fire, drink 1/2 bottle of tequila, use a cheap combo rig from HEB, wade out as far as you can and let her rip. Use the reel for 1 year then replace it with another cheap reel from HEB. The medium duty rods seldom break. You will catch fish under any conditions but sunrise or sunset on calm days for best results. You can buy a boat load of fish for the price some folks spend on equipment. |

Ain't it weird how sometimes things you want just kind of fall right into your lap?
Today as I was loading up my car to go fishing, a neighbor saw me and asked if I might be interested in buying a rod and reel. He said he was moving away from the coast and would no longer need them. I asked what he had, and lo and behold, he shows me a Cabela's Salt Striker 80 with a matching 10' Salt Striker rod. I was planning on buying these new in a few weeks, but he sold them to me for $50 and even threw in a large tackle box with tackle at no extra. Just the sinkers in the box were worth $20-30 alone. The reel needs a good cleaning but appears sound, and the rod looks fine. I should go buy a lottery ticket now, lol. |
