who's heard about this?

the city has (or is about to) purchase 4 acres off flour bluff drive to set up a site for a "temporary" holding facility for bulky items, brush, hazardous waste... OH, and "some" household waste... so basically, unlike the island location that is a recycling center free of household trash, the one in the bluff is supposed to accept "some" regular ol' garbage.

awesome, the bluff finally starts cleaning up, and the city decides to build a fkn dump right in the middle of it!

This is what happens when a city is run by liberals. Anyone who has lived in FB, knows that forever that rd (holley rd) has been a site for illegal dumping by the water tower. So instead of busting people and writing citations, the city is now pandering to the lazy a-holes in the bluff and ruining a good developing neighborhood and $4.2mil of taxpayer money. Im still waiting on them to pave don patricio properly and widen it to a safe width. Liberals love to pander to the lazy, this is a prime example of it. Instead of making them drive to the dump like the rest of us taxpayers, they are bringing the dump to them. And the claim of old appliances being dumped is a total fairy tale. Anyone who knows anyone who is a metal scrapper knows that a washer/dryer/fridge/freezer/lawnmower, etc.. left on a curb in the bluff is adios in 48hrs or less. More of that Nelda love Rolling Eyes

People have already been using that place for years now. They have also been using Laguna Shores and all roads inbetween. Maybe this will help keep some of the trash off the streets, well the paper type anyway.

Just for kicks where would you have them put a "transfer station".

I'm sure the site will be clean in appearance. Im sure there are other locations/businesses that are an eye soar in FB.
I've seen a lot of holding/transfer stations in my travels and its a good idea for rural areas.

I " think " it has something to do with the Island. It's costing the City
A lot to haul trash back and forth from the island to the landfill off of Ayers .
So, where else to Dump it but the bluff ?.then again, they still have to haul it from the bluff to Ayers ...unless of course they plan to just leave it in the bluff all together ...here's an other " theory " . They have to do something with the trash.. Sure in the heck don't want a land fill on the Island now do they ?
They don't wanna raise more taxes out there and scare developers away now do they .. Dump it in the Bluff ...now ... Here's an other thought to ponder ...
The "BLUFF " and the " ISLAND " are flood pron, if we do have a " cane "
Or a major flood out there, where's all the bad stuff from purposed site going to go ? the Bluff becomes a major toxic waste site ...last theory...
I think the island is actually tapped out on development, meaning between taxes and cost to live out there and what the City can actually afford is way, way outta whack to the point it can't be fixed . Thus the " Schlitterbahn "
Fiasco ....careful who ya vote for ..

We actually run a pool on my street, and set an over/under number for how long certain items stay on the curb. 48 hr is a BIG number. Laughing Laughing

But IMS, if you are asking about potential locations, there are a number of large tracts of land out Rodd Field, that geographically are about 1/2 to the City dump if you are traveling from the Bluff or the Island. Just a thought. But this deal looks like it was set in stone a long time ago, and us 'Bluff Rats ain't gonna get 2 cents worth of opinion listened to. Mad

If the new Walmart couldn't have a tire and auto center because it is "too close to the Oso", how is this any different.

thank you Stan for being a voice of reason.....as a long-time God's Country resident myself, as Stan has been, I'm simply going to state that I believe this is a good idea, and will go far to cleaning up Flour Bluff....site TBD....

They're going to dump stuff....you aren't going to stop them with citations.....give them someplace to go For Free and at least centralize it where it can be transferred to the proper facility...

up here we had a landfill that was open to the public...
then there was a charge added to off-load...
the county roads soon became the alternate land-fill..
which I predicted...
I see mid-night refuse disposal all over the State..
cheaper in the long-run to use tax monies to keep one site open than to clean the out-lying areas.

When I first moved to Hawaii I was stunned to see some really beautiful areas turned into garbage dumps - even some areas that would otherwise be great beaches.

It wasn't that there were no legitimate garbage dumps on the Islands where folks could dispose of their refuse, it was local people that just refused to pay even $0.50 to dump their trash.

Unfortunately, everywhere has exactly those kinds of people, both rich and poor - they willfully spit into the face of whatever society/community they are in.

"Tolerance" is what perpetuates things like this.

If the fine for illegal dumping were $10,000.00, you would see less of it...

maybe they could have built it off of laguna shores near that existing superfund site north of graham road... but on second thought, why do we need one at all.

JC elliot is a transfer station, and it's a huge crap hole. go take a drive by there and look at the trash that didn't QUITE make it into the fenced location. not to mention the garbage that gets dropped off on adjacent streets after people find out they have to pay to drop an uncovered load off there. (but it's a pretty sweet deal the city of corpus trash trucks can drive all over the city with uncovered loads

I don't have a problem with brush and tires. I do have a problem with them accepting household waste. If it was set up as a proper recycling and brush disposal center, that would be great. the kink is *house hold trash*. I don't want that poo poo being stockpiled 1/3 mile from my house.

basically what this boils down to is what Shorty describes... the island and schliterbhan will be generating more trash, and they don't want to spend more money trucking across the bridge. and colleen mcintyre certainly doesn't want a nasty little collection station that accepts household waste in her neighborhood, so they're blaming a blue couch off division road as the reason to build a dump in one of the nicest, fastest growing areas of corpus.

hte irony of their arguments is insane... they keep talking about washing machines and couches, but they're going to accept hazardous wastes, household garbage... and oh yeah.... couches too.

I pay a substantial amount of money in taxes to the city and county annually in taxes, and now what do I get? a fkn dump.

Well what does everyone think of the vacant land across from HEB? Rockport and Fulton use to have a transfer station I know because I repaired all their equipment. It was actually not a bad little place. If the right person is in charge and things are done right and it it kept in check it could work out ok. I don't like driving all the way to the garbage dump. I vote yes on the transfer station. And why would you put anything like that on Laguna Shores it's our main tourist attraction. We shouldn't put it on the shores of the Oso either there's a better place in the area just got to find it. We are going to be the maintanance town for the Island I've always thought that.

Having moved to Flour Bluff last year, I am sure I haven't met the residency requirements to be considered a Flour Bluffian. However, I have lived rurally Texan most of my life and understand the dumping problem all too well. When good intentions are matched with quality management, you have a winning solution. I, too, have seen appropriately located collection centers reduce the amount of waste scattered along the roads, even if there is a fee. The good intentions seem present. The location, well, where should it be for maximum effect and what should be the definition quality management? That might be where citizen input should be focused. While this seems clearly an off topic subject, I am grateful it popped up here or I would not have known about it.

this....and I agree, I don't think they should accept "household waste"....that's what your green monster in front of your house is for....the trash from your kitchen....

however, I would like to see them take "bulky" items....I think that's where people are getting confused, over the terminology.....

couches and mattresses, yes......stinky kitchen garbage NO....

tires, old paint cans, brush, batteries, bulky items, and motor oil.....that would be my list....

AND....wherever it is located, it needs to be screened very well, by fence, landscaping, both, something....that way it doesn't LOOK like a transfer station....
