Well if it's a fish fry that could happen soon. Maiinly I was just thinking sheboygan at the backyard shop. I need to stock up on some fresh fish before the words fry come out of my mouth, and the skeeters need to get gone too! |

So my trailer manufacturer plate shows that my GVWR is 4500 pounds.
From the TX DPS site, the following shows the inspection requirements:
Inspection Criteria for the Annual
SAFETY Inspection
What's Inspected by Vehicle Type
Items of Inspection for a Trailers or Mobile Homes
05.06 Inspect All Trailers, Semitrailers, Pole Trailers, or Mobile Homes Exceeding 4,500 Pounds Actual Gross Weight or Registered Weight For: (Listed in suggested order of inspection) Refer to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, if required.
* Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility on towing vehicle
1. Brakes (system) (If gross weight exceeds 4,500 pounds)
2. Tires
3. Wheel Assembly
4. Safety Guards or Flaps (if four tires or more on rearmost axle) Pole trailers exempt.
5. Tail Lamps (2)
6. Stop Lamps (2)
7. License Plate Lamp (1)
8. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
9. Turn Signal Lamps
10. Clearance Lamps
11. Side Marker Lamps
12. Side Reflectors
13. Side Marker Lamps and Reflectors (30 feet or more in overall length)
(Refer to Reference Section as per lighting diagrams and as applicable to the particular trailer being inspected.)
14. Serial or Vehicle Identification Number
15. Window Tint.
Since my trailer is rated for a GVWR of 4,500 pounds, trailer brakes are NOT required due to the fact that doesn't exceed 4,500 pounds.
Any opinions as to my interpretation? |

I would say you are correct. It appears 4,501 lbs is the magic number for brake requirements and inspection. I take it as 4,500 lbs and under requires no inspection. My trailers are all well over the 4500 lb thresh hold so I never considered the difference between 4,500 lbs and 4,501 lbs. I think you are correct myself, definitions clearly state EXCEEDING 4,500 lbs. This is from the Texas regs

it's not my opinion, but what they told me at the County Courthouse when I went down three times to get this done was that it's the weight of the trailer AND the weight of the boat (TOTAL LOAD ON THE STREETS)...
what I suggest you do (what I was successful in doing) was to get the trailer down-graded in GVWR by using manufacturer information found on the Interwebs....BUT, other naysayers will tell you to go get brakes retrofitted on your trailer on general principle because "that's what the rules say".....

| 4500 and you are safe. 4501 is the number that kicks you over. Numerous manufacturer's use 4500 as a GVWR for this exact reason. Same reason uhaul rates there trucks as 26000, 26001 kicks you over into regs and requires more than a class C. No need to change anything, just have all the basics and you are good to go. |

To follow up on an earlier comment I made, here is where it states that some boat trailers are even exempt from lighting. This should also help clear up a little of what is needed for a trailer not exceeding 4500 gvwr.

| so if i get this correct, my empty trailer weights 1050 lbs and by boat,motor,etc. as it sets "off" the trailer weights 3500 lbs, I will have to get inspected? |

RTS Auto repair shop off of Kostoryz at Houston street behind the car wash can inspect your trailers, vehicles, and motorcycles.They took care of my truck and boat trailer all in one shot as my truck needed an inspection also . Fast friendly service little to no waiting time and would highly recommend to any body it's a little off the beaten path but worth the drive. These guys will even set up an appointment to meet your needs/schedule.
RTS/Return To Service 361-806-2920 If they don't answer right away try again they are usually in the shop inspecting something. |

Bought a Majek 20v with 150 Yami 4 stroke, went to title everything and was told total weight was 4200 pounds, wrong? Politely told the lady trailer, boat, and motor came in at under 3000 and she simply changed it in computer and I avoided inspection. What a racket! If they can simply change it on your word where is the reality of what they are quoting on weights and need for inspection? More government BS at work!

| Government BS indeed i hope no one believes they really care about your or my safety it's all driven by the $$$ just remember the magic number is 4500 lbs. that or less no inspection required. |

That's what I did. She quoted me 4200 pounds for my rig, I just said no way not even close and she inputted what I told her. Certainly not saying that will work every time but throwing out 4200 pounds for a 20V and 150 Yamaha was ridiculous.

| majek doesn't publish weights for some of their boats. maybe taking the boat and weighing it at a certified scale would be the easiest. I think it costs about $25, and there's no way they could dispute it. |
