To put it very bluntly ..over 4500 lbs registered weight OR MFG weight rating , which ever is greater is what the state defaults too and requires an inspection .......weigh station tickets and all that makes no difference if the trailer is titled for over 4500 lbs or rated over 4500 lbs requires no secret code to get around it, just comply and move on.

WHOA! why the anger? is this you, Kevin Keischnick, County Tax Assessor/Collector?

"pay the extra and move on" is what you seem to be saying, when it's not as simple as that....for one, although my trailer is rated as being able to carry 4500 lbs, (plus the trailer at 1100lbs would put it at 5600lbs) there is no way it will EVER get close to that weight.....my boat with leaning post and console, with a 150hp, full of fuel, two 120's full of ice for a cabin trip, plus the trailer isn't over 3800lbs....

AND, my trailer didn't come with brakes, and it would be foolish to expect people to retrofit trailers to have brakes in a saltwater environment especially when they don't need it....or want them....

I'm not trying to "slide one by the County" or "not go by the books and pay my fair share" by any stretch....just trying to help my fellow CF'ers weave through the paperwork snafu down at the courthouse since I had to go down there three different times myself and sort it out.....and it makes the County people's job easier too if you have your story straight and your paperwork all in order and with you (don't forget your insurance for your vehicle when you go down there)....

that's one of the things this board is great for, helping each other.....Saltbranch - "read the rules and close this thread".....grumpy on a Friday senor?

Bite me Smile--I like that.

I never said anyone was trying to slide one past the county atleast I dont believe I did. The law now clearly states 4500 lbs and require inspection and trailer brakes. They go by the MFG rating or what you rate the trailer for and default the heaviest weight. So the days of derating trailers is over. Since they passed the law several years ago with no clause to grandfather trailers that do not meet the new requirements. Then yes you are expected to bring trailer into compliance. One option is to go back MFG and request a new vin plate with lower ratings....some will do it, some will not. If your mfg will not provide a new VIN plate with lower ratings, then you are expected to bring trailer into compliance. I am sure inspections can be "bought" etc.
I am not angry or mad, except for the fact I did attached incorrect link Smile in previous post. I am fairly familiar with this inspection law as I received my first ticket for not having a trailer inspection sticker on it back in 12 or 13 I think ( a few years ago) and I tried to fight the ticket...lost.
I can tell you its very aggravating because I did have to retrofit brakes on one of my flatbed trailers. Another trailer I had, it used mobile home axles. I had to replace complete axles with brakes to bring into code. There is no wiggle room here, its cut and dried on weight capacity and what the requirements are. I am surprised they do not have an exemption for boat trailers. There is an exemption for trailers with farm plates
Good luck

So if I have a kayak trailer under all that weight with tail lights and blinkers...can I get away with not having plates?

Under 4500 lb rating , you are not required to have the inspection sticker annually. Yes you are required to have plates just like any other trailer.

Thats what I thought the cop had written a ticket for, not having a commercial inspection sticker. I am not commercial and me and the cop did not see eye to eye on the side of the road. So I got ticket and went to fight it, thats when I learned of the new law requiring trailer inspection. Not just commercial but all over 4500 lbs including private use trailers.
I hope you find a loop hole in this law, I could not.

There is a certified scale at the corner of Corn Products and Leopard. Heads up they only take cash. It was $7.00 or so.

Those scales are no longer certified FYI, have to go to Robstown to get the closest CAT scales. Had to do this a few months back on a trailer I built in order to get the registration for it.
On another note 4500 lbs is the magic number for inspection being needed, but also according to the state lights do not have to be present on a boat trailer if it is used during daylight hours. I know that sounds absolutely crazy, but look into the laws, and it specifically says this.
