That is a damned good question:
I have two versions:
1. The current configuration is what we get when it is finished. No way does that look like four lanes with shoulders to me.
2. Current lanes are to be opened in some # of weeks for use with 2 lane traffic(same as current old lanes) and the current causeway will be taken down in about two to three months time. Then.....they will put up some new pilings made just for this project and extend the current new configuration out(widening it) to make a four lane causeway with shoulders for pull out emergencies.
If anyone can explain or expound on this I would like to hear it. I visited the tech spec site mentioned by other poster but too techie for this old man.

I was hoping the hight wouldn't be because of a new port that was going to be built in Copano bay.
Very interesting PowerPoint. Thanks for sharing. _________________ Fish HARD or stay home with Mommy! |

That was VERY interesting, thanks!
JMO, but on the height thingy: Who knows what the future holds? Better to build it a tad tall than go back years or decades later and modify it AFTER traffic and costs have skyrocketed!
At our local sailing club, the mentality is just the opposite. I coined the unofficial club motto years ago: Why do something right when you can do it over, and over, and over again at greatly added cost? _________________ Dave

Aside from the old rebar and no-telling what else they used in the construction of this bridge, ya that would be a great plan. _________________ -Pat |

Still waiting for a layman's explanation of time frame and how this is going to get done! I guess that will be forthcoming right after the Schlitterban (sp?) updates??? _________________ Mike |

| to me it seems that the explanation of the height of the new is that it may be related to hurricanes. since hurricane ike all new construction in the galveston area has to be 18 feet or higher. could that be statewide. just a theory of mine but the storm surge in galveston from hurricane ike was much higher than they thought it would be. even though the hurricane was a cat 2 or 3 the surge was from a cat 5 hurricane. i live in houston area and the debris piled on the causeway was enormous. |

I think the answer to your question is on page 7.
Phase I - 62 ft -3 years
Demo Existing Bridge - 3 months
Phase II - 18 ft -1 year _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!
