|
|
Hello,
I have been reading the post about the conditions in the first mile of PINS.
We are headed down Thursday night to stay in the parking lot and then go on the beach on Fri. A.M. We are towing 30 ft TT's and I am a bit worried about what the beach may be like. Does anyone have any current conditions??
We have done this for a few years now and this is the first time I have worried about it. All the vehicles are 4x4 so we are ok there but, if the beach is real bad I don't want to try it with a trailer in tow. When the whole group gets there on Fri. we will have 5 trailers in all.
This is a family type trip with several kids so we are not looking to go but maybe a mile. We mainly just fish for whiting and have a fish fry from that.

| The driving is real bad right now. If yourgoing to bring trailers I would try to camp at the camp grounds. It is the road before the palivon. I'm not sure if it cost but if it does it will be cheaper than a toe truck. Stay there and go down fishing in the day. Getting a trailer stuck on the beach could cost 5 or 6 hundred dollars and that's if you close to the pavement. I know I can't afford it. My fish already cost me about 60 dollars a pound now or more. I've been down on it the last 3 weekends for the day but in 2 weeks is my anniversary and we want to stay the weekend down on PINS but there is no way I can pull my little utility trailer down there because it would drag on the axle the whole way. If you have a bulldozer pulling your TT then I might would try it but not with a 4x4. Even if you could pull it in the ruts you still have to get it turned around and it is even hard just to get your truck out of the ruts much less a TT. Like was suggested, stay in the campground and then drive down when you want otherwise you be in for a very bad time. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

The campground does not have any hookups and you can not run generators after 10:00 P.M. I'm not leaving the Misus and her Mom w/out AC not thank you!!
Guess we will have to find someplace else to go. Thanks for the replies!!!
Who knows??? It may change in the next 3 days!!! |

You should give Matagorda a try. There is a very nice park with hook-ups at the enterance, they also have showers that are cleaned at least once a day. Not sure what the cost is, but the fishing is not too bad there and the driving is better then PINS. I'm a PINS fisherman, but I may wait until we get a good storm to clear the beach.
Good luck.

| I camped on the first 500 hundred yards with our pop-up and 4X4; I will never do it again, spent most of the weekend pulling out small cars and minivans. |

Matagorda had tons of sargassum at last weekend's Bum Run so that may not help you out. |

I was at Matagorda Saturday, and Tyler's correct about the sargassum... kind of. The access to the beach is 2WD and the County runs a maintainer on about 2 miles of the beach to keep it clear of weed and 2WD driveable. I saw several families catching whiting in that area. The LCRA campground is on the old river channel and has full hookups. It was only about 1/2 full last Saturday. There are several public piers easily accessable as well. Remember to buy a $6.00 beach pass sticker for each vehicle you plan to drive onto the beach at one of the local stores.
Here's the link.

I've been fishing Matagorda for the last 8 years , it's not a bad option , the LCRA has built up a very nice camping/RV area right by the water , there is very fishable/wade water right by the campground to the right side of the pier , the pier has decent fishing , alot of whiting can be caught between the 2 jetties from the pier , heres a tip , theres a little bit of shell bottom half way down the pier on the river side (not the surf side) , here's another tip , go down the beach 1.7 miles then take a left between the dunes , you'll know where to turn , there used to be a cut there and it almost looks like a highway now (well kinda) ,when you get to a body of water thats 3 mile lake , I normally take a right just before that and head to the bay , there's great wade fishing back there . Here's the last tip i'm gonna give ya , heading towards the beach right past the swing bridge there's a little place to park , if you park there and fish that side of the ICW there is always Flounder there , they hang out right by the bridge along the mud and oyster drop off , if you look down the ICW you will see 3 old tele poles sticking up out of the water , that spot normally hold trout , my favorite bait in that area is chartreuse gulp on a 1/4 ounce jig drug along the bottom , dead shrimp is not bad either on a fish finder rig . _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

Well gentlemen, I want to say thank you for all the info. Especially the fishing tips.
We have decided to go to Padre Balli Park. The Ladies of the group are not thrilled about the extra hour and a half to get there from Boerne. Mustang is full.
From what you guys have told me, this new park sounds like a really good place to go. We may try to make a second trip this year and go there.
Thanks again!!
P.S. I feel bad about getting all this info and I don't have any tips in return.
We only go about 1-2 times a year and with the two girls I don't get to fish as much as I would like. I guess that will come after they are grown and out of the house. |

Just wanted to give a trip report since so many had suggestions.
We went down on Thursday as planned. Played with the family Friday.
Saturday the guys went about two-three miles from BHP and fished for about three hours.
We caught 2 Blacktips one 24 one 28" and 6 whiting all good size. The fishing got better in the rainstorm that tried to drown us. It was not lighting so that is why we kept on fishin.
Thanks again for the info and good luck to all the fishermen and women. |
