Admin - move thread if need be, this forum just has the most eyes on it.

Neighbor broke up three terrier type dogs while they were ravaging chickens . They got into my back yard and killed 4 birds. He saved someone else's chicken too so they were apparently on a bit of a streak today. Say's he's seen them before and they live with someone nearby.

I'm a dog lover so I understand things like this happen sometimes. Not looking to talk to authorities or anything silly over some yard birds but would like to have a civil chat with the dog owner. If you know anyone in the Seaside/ Alisa Ann area with three dogs who like to escape please PM me so I can make contact.
Thanks

Probably had a chicken squeaky toy when they were puppies. I bet they just kill the chickens but do not eat them. Very Happy

they'll be back...
once a dog starts killing for fun it's near22ly impossible to stop them..
if it was your dog and killed 1 chicken, you could tie it around his neck... chain the dog outside for a week till the chicken falls off and that usually works...
neighbors dogs (PLURAL) is gonna be a problem till you're outta chickens or he's outta dogs.

Hadn't thought about that... even more reason to make contact. when I first got them my pup excitedly grabbed one and tore it open. I just beat him with the dying bird and he got the message. I guess he didnt like being covered in chicken sh*t haha.

I had this same problem many times out at the farm but with coyotes. Go over to the good people @ Naylors or Tractor Supply and get yourself an electric fence kit.

This will take care of those chicken Eatin dogs once and for all !!!

Maybe the problem isn't really the dogs at all. well maybe some. I used to rasied chickens I had 40 at one time. Some really nice hybrids too. My favorite are Rhode Island Reds good egg layers and a good disposition as far as chickens go. Maybe it's your pen or fence. I never lost a chicken to a dog. However I lost a great dog to a human who shot him for bothering his chickens. He was a great dog. A good pen and coop is a must. Bury your fence below grade. Do everything you can do to protect your chickens. Chickens aren't worth shooting or beating a dog over. Chickens lays eggs thus more chickens. You can't replace a good and special dog, and if you have ever had that dog you know what I'm talking about. Fix your fence.

IMS- I am, without a doubt, partially at fault for the demise of the chickens. They have a pen and coop but are ...or were... allowed to free range the back yard. They eventually found ways into the front for additional foraging area and for the past year it hasn't been a problem with me or the neighbors.
I agree completely - no dog is worth any number of chickens. Predators / prey... nature happens, I get it. Honestly, I've been amazed that the neighborhood cats haven't taken any birds. I've actually watched two of them stalking ground squirrels or something in the back while he flock scratches a few yards away.
Nature and fences aside, I'd like to discuss it with the dog owner. Smile

Free range chicken eggs are the best in the world. They have good dark orange yokes and the flavor is so much better than the store bought variety. Good luck with your backyard chickens . It almost makes me want a few myself.

I bought some white leghorns once just for the eggs. They wouldn't lay though. A guy who had roosters said I needed a rooster. Said that's why they wouldn't lay. He had a few extras, so he nicely gave me one. I guess he was correct because they started laying. Everyday. I kept up with it for awhile by eating them and then giving them to friends. Then I had to start giving them to neighbors. I had plenty of eggs.
I caught my own dog with a chicken in his mouth. I watched him climb the six foot wire fence like it was a ladder. Didn't seem like a killing offense, so I tried the chicken on the neck thing. He pulled it off after a couple of days and ate it. Never cured him. I got rid of the chickens. Not because of him but because I couldn't keep up with the eggs. The dog left too. He must have found some more chickens somewhere.

LOL This cold weather is turning this place into a warm general store Smile

Riofrio has chickens on a canal home on the island and they are really cool. He has done all the precautions. Racoons can reach in and take your chickens too! Rats make off with eggs etc.

Rats... maybe thats why I haven't seen an egg in a couple months. Smile That or the cold. But when all of them were laying daily I was up to my heuvos in eggs. Hard to keep up for sure. I've still got three, we'll see how they do when it warms up and they start poopin' breakfast again.

To continue the path this thread has taken.... Smile

Extend their light period by turning on a light in their pen so they have more hours of light. Should help with the egg production.
