Sure hope I don't get thrown under the bus for this.
I'm running a ('06) 23' Marshall with a ('14) 250 E-tec (HO) and use 26 gal
to make a run to Marker 4 in the cut. That's works out to 2.8461 gal for the
74 (round trip) run to the cut from Clem's running at 4200 rpm's (44 mph).
My Marshall tops out at 5500 rpms which is 60+
You might want to take a look at your prop. Based on the numbers I'm reading your not running enough prop , your rpm's are very high compared to the speed your getting.

nah, no buses.....
that's about par for the course, but yeah, speckled.trout has a good point, 5900RPM may be a little too much....are you running a four or three blade prop? it may not be aggressive enough pitch, and you may be losing top end.....
I'm running a 4 blade prop that has a bit of cup in it.....while I can jump up in one boat length, I lose the top end (and fuel efficiency).....I need to pick up a three blade prop for those long runs and could probably pick up another half mile per gallon, which would be huge on longer runs like that....I typically stick around here, but would swap when headed to the cabin....a few folks still do this today....
keeping your hands out of the throttle is the easiest way to increase fuel mileage.....I mean, wheres the fire? running 5400 RPM for 40 miles?!

2006 Suzuki 115
18' Shallowsport
4200 - 4500 rpm =30mph
This took 25 gallons in Sept.
Bluff Landing to Penescal to Yarbrough to South Graveyard back to Badlands back to Bluffs Landing. Continued next day from Bluffs Landing rounding out of ICW in CC Bay to NAS, mess around in boat hole back to the backyard back to Bluffs. I figure its in the 4 mpg range. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

Hi Mike
Been Running 19 pitch 4 blade. I don't run it wide open was just curious what other were able to run. I do however run at 5400 if I dropped the rpms down to 4500 i am only doing 33 mph and that makes for a loooong ride. I have came to the conclusion that the Kenner is a slug in the water. Rides nice and dry but slow. I have a 3 blade 21 pitch mirage plus. Guess I am going give it a try. |

Yeah that's exactly what you have to do. You have to fill your tank to the top, Run a known distance, you can work that out on Google earth, and then go fill up again and do the division. I suggest that you do that with a three-quarter load that way you know your worst gas mileage.
Guessing is never fun if you guess wrong. _________________

I really think you might even go to a 23 pitch. I don't think there will be much difference between the 19p and the 21p.
I'm running a 23 pitch 4 blade lifter prop.
Why don't you check with the guys at Blue Streak and see if they have a
23 you could try. I have a couple of 23's but don't have hubs for a Mercury.
The ratio your looking for would be 10 mph to every 1000 rpm when your running in the mid-range of the motor. 4000 rpm = 40mph.
Sometimes the hull design will not let you get there with some boats but
at least get as close as you can.

Just moved from a 20' center console with a 2-stroke 150 Mercury to an 17' Whaler with a 40 4-stroke Honda.
I can run all over the place and burn 12 gallons for the weekend now vs almost a hundred gallons with the Mercury. The wife is very happy.
One thing to note, I have to trailer from Austin for fishing, I got 9 mpg in the pickup with the CC but it does not even notice the Whaler. Weekend fishing trips used to net me almost a $500 overall gas bill.
More savings, more trips. |

| This is not a fair comparison but I get between 4-6 mpg. I have a 22' panga made by Andros and a four stoke 140 Suzuki. I get good mileage, but my has speed is around 35mph. I really like the boat for all around use. its good with kids and dogs with the higher gunnels. Those same gunnels catch some wind so for just fishing that can be an issue from time to time. |
