I know, you never know what these things will do. But I see a lot of good reports. My brother is coming down from northern California to fish next week and hope to find them still around.

On a related subject, went on an air boat guided fishing trip with Shorty in Rockport last week and limited out on drum. He used fresh dead shrimp and pinched the head and the tail. Lead weight. The only down side was the perch.

Good eats!

We caught a mess of them yesterday. They are still thick between billings and the second cut on the left going towards packery. Thousands of them. Peeled dead shrimp and sight casting to them. We also picked up a flounder and redfish while we were there

Can someone explain this? I usually get skunked when saltwater fishing unless I'm with a guide. Maybe it's my technique/presentation.

It's and old trick that is gaining popularity---it gets the juice in the water,,,drums use their noses and bellies to feed.

If I'm using a blue crab for bait trying to catch black drum in 2 feet of water, what's the best way to hook the crab?

How do drum strike? I know them piggies will tear the crab apart if they find it before the drum. What can I do?

One thing that I learned about drum when I was a kid: if your line suddenly goes slack, real like hell and strike hard if using conventional hooks, or just apply a good tension if using circle hooks. I've rarely experienced this with other fish, but black drum seem to have a habit of grabbing a bait and swimming on with it, and if that happens to be in your direction, your line will suddenly go slack and continue to do so!

There's no telling how many drum I missed until I learned this trick, but it was a bunch! We used to fish A LOT on the old concrete pier at the NAS, and this phenomenon happened quite frequently out there until I figured it out! Rolling Eyes Embarassed

I found fish bites - orange or pink shrimp worked well in ULM for black drum.
