"After the causeway came in during 1950, people just wrecked everything they could. The Coast Guard buildings, the Beach Patrol cabins, the cabins at Black Hill-heck, they cut up my blankets, broke the windows, and even stole the plates and pillows. That was after the causeway got put through you see. And hell, these guys with metal detectors had dug the damn floor up...before I even owned a camera the vandals hit and that was that, there'll never be a picture of it all now.
--Louis Rawalt, 1978 interview

"There was never much trespassing on the Island. Occasionally somebody would want to go up the beach to Corpus Christi, and I had men here at Point Isabel to look after that for me...There was never much of that, and the principal people who came over there were fishermen."
--Pat Dunn himself, the Duke of Padre, 1933

"Pat Dunn was a character. I know I used to pick him up over on the Flour Bluff when the causeway was out, and take him by boat to the ranch house on the head of the island, up near Packery. I brought him across one day and we drove up. He got out and opened the gate, and there was a steer, laying on the dirt dead. And he walked over and looked at it, and he came back and he said, "God Da*n Louie, that cow--that steer--was shot, and it hasn't been too long ago." And while we were discussing it here came a couple of--one of them's name was Johnson--driving up. And the stopped, and Burton went on over to talk to them, and their tracks were there--their tire tracks were there. And we'd been looking at then. He looked at their car tracks. He asked them what they were doing over there. Oh, they were hunting treasure. Well, by that time you couldn't drive up the island because--well, there were three passes open.

And he lit into them, he called them all kinds of damned names. He told them to get the hell off of there and start gittin' right now. He wasn't kidding. And they took off, and--one of these fellows, I knew him, as Johnson--he'd been up for murder a couple times and got out of it. And Burton came back to the car and I said, "Damn, Burton, do you konw who that was??" Burton says--"I don't give a damn." And I told him that was the guy they tried for murder here just a couple or three months ago. "I don't give a damn," he said. "I knew you were setting there with that rifle in the car." Well, I guess I sure enough was, so he felt sort of safe. But Burton was hot, he sure was, Burton didn't pull any punches.
--Louis Rawalt, 1978 interview

That's a tough one to mull over for me too Towboat. Feds vs possibility of it being paved over.

I agree it is a real tuff call.

I just returned from a 4 wheeler trip from St Elmo Co over the divide and back. We saw absolutly no litter or trash. The difference is pride and education - period.

Good for you. Take a stand, even if it's unpopular.

I suppose it isn't the most liked idea Aaron, you are probably right about that!

I personally find no fault in your logic. But I feel that we may be in the minority. Doesn't mean we shouldn't make ourselves heard.

Yes your report belongs on a fishing forum all of them for that matter and the world news. Will it do any good as a matter of fact it would. Maybe not for all but for all who have a heart a heart that's in the right place like yours. If your report changes the way one person thinks or acts it's better than none at all. tftr....IMS

To me, it's a lot like "gun control." We can pass all the laws we want trying to "stop" behavior....but the people you are looking to stop are the ones already breaking the law. And they'll break the new ones with the same impunity. But even more dangerous: if people can't see the resource themselves (e.g., being able to access PINS), they'll never know it exists--which means trying to protect it THEN will be impossible. Because no one will care.

Unfortunately the logic results in punishing those who have done nothing wrong for the transgressions of the jerks and aholes. I just can't agree with that. We are punishing those who have done nothing wrong far to much in this "modern progressive" society we now have to live in.

I think there is a way to deal with the problem but unfortunately the whiners and twinky winkies could not stand it. Why don't we just create some severe penalties and just plain inforce them. Obviously we would have to deal with the whiners and twinky winkies in order to accomplish this, but that would probably be in the best interest of all of us anyway.

I'll bet if you got you hand chopped off (without a long ridiculously court drama involved - Note: I didn't say no court drama - I just said not ridiculously long) for throwing you crap out the car window or anywhere else for that matter, I bet this crap would minimize itself in a heartbeat.

Take a look at Singapore - they got it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trash in the street, you get 100 lashes. Guess what, they have the cleanest streets in the world.
