I had a nice discussion on this with Skipper and Karen during the wind yesterday down south. I can throw both just fine but lately have just pretty much gone to spinners for the surf for trout and light rod fishing mainly due to the wind always being in your face in the surf. Now I tend to take only spinners in the bay and watched as Skipper and Karen constantly had to back off of one brake etc, adjust the spool etc. and I kept asking them why? Why not just use spinners?

I think a lot of if is attitudes with baitcasters, they are harder to throw and tougher to master casting. Does it make them better? Does it make the person fishing with the baitcaster better than one throwing a spinner? The pros are that baitcasters tend to be more durable and can handle more drag. The cons are they constantly over run ( backlash ) and it is frustrating for beginners. Not to mention you have to switch hands when casting and going to reeling. Pros on spinners are they are easier for novices to learn to cast. The cons are that they tend to break or use to break more often than baitcasters. I am not so sure this is true anymore but for years that was the argument, bail would lock, bad drags etc. The other cons with spinners is they twist the line when you reel when the fish is pulling drag. What say you?

I'm 50-50. Embarassed

Depends on what I'm throwing really, lighter stuff gets the spinner, popping corks and plugs get the baitcaster.

I don't really have a wind problem, I grew up on Penn baitcasters.

Spinners all the way.

As for the pros -

- plenty of reliable models out there in terms of durablility. Yes, if you step on the spinning reel you can break the bail, but as long as you're not an idiot you can make them last just as long as a baitcaster

- plenty of reliable drag systems on there, especially for bay fishing. You're not fighting sailfish, for crying out loud. Who needs 20+ lbs of drag for a redfish?

- line twisting practically a non-issue if you use braid, as it has no 'memory and doesn't spin and kink like mono

- Wind is a non-issue. No back-lashing, and although "wind knots" (which is a bad name because it has nothing to do with the wind) are a MINOR problem with some spinners if you overload the spool, they are preventable if you manually close the bail and don't overload.

Cons -

-you don't look like an elite fisher guy. But then again, if thats what you're going for, get a fly rod Wink

I pretty much agree Tyler, I use nothing but spinners anymore, even offshore. The drags on the new reels (like my Quantun Cabo) are smoother and stronger than the drags on most conventional reels of the same weight, and super braid takes line capacity and twist right out of the picture.

Of course I'm not fishing for 1,000 pound Bluefin either, but even then there's probably a spinner that could do the job.

Spinners, unless I'm in the surf with a long rod with the wind at my back-- and even then, I HATE the backlash on those big casts. Personally, I want to fish...not mess with a reel. Very Happy

Bait casters in bay , spinners in surf.probably economics has some thing to do with it. They do make some awesome egg beaters these days .i love my high end bait casters but they would last a day in the surf

besides what has already been said

Baitcaster con - need educated thumb
Spinner con - need educated finger to feather coils
Baitcaster pro - freelining (I've not tried a baitrunner type spinner)
Spinner pro - lightweight baits

Accuracy - both equal

pet peeve - spinners don't need an anti-reverse bearing, I always liked the manual lever anti-reverse.

Bottom line - feels like I have better contact with the bait using a baitcaster

Spinning for me, simplicity and function. However I like my squidders and jigmasters for the surf along with spinning reels. I have used spinning reels all my life not that I can't whip a baitcaster because I can. I like working on and cleaning my own reels and spinning reels are easy. I guess it all boils down to the old phrase ...to each is own. I prefer the Shimano Stradic. Yes I have encountered those that say " oh you use a spinning reel" I just think whatever man. I guess at times like that I wish I could unfold my library of fich pics on the cleaning table alone, but what the hey.

I like using both. For topwaters, croaker, corkies, and black drum I use a baitcaster. For soft plastics, popping corks and free lined shrimp the 2500 series spinning reel is the go too. The surf rods are jig masters and senators, unless I am throwing lures. Then I am using a 4000 series spinning reel. All the spinning reels are loaded with mono and the baitcasters are mono.

I learned on a 5000 from 1965-1967 in grade school. Great reel back then, but IMHO has been far outclassed since. I can tell you one thing: i got to be world class good and quick at getting out world class backlashes!!!! Rolling Eyes Cool

We also had a Mitchell 300. Both reels were bought at Oshman's. One was a backlash wizard and the other a line twisting, coil jumping, bird nesting fool!
One baitcaster and one spinner!
