I've been down maybe many a times and have only seen this much weed once ... In the past its been noticeable but never 20-40 ft deep into the beach.
I dont know why i just thought about it - So my question is this .... WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THAT WEED??
I know it has to go somewhere or something happens to it as I've been down to PINS and have seen the whole beach weed less - so what gives?
Do the Karakawas slowly start coming through at night and start repurposing it? Weed fairy? |

It rots.
Worst I ever saw it was maybe 10 years ago? The pile at the waterline was four feet high. You had to dig a path to the water.
I never remembered this stuff as a kid, (70's) it seems to be a recent thing. |

I'm going with the "Weed Fairy" hypothesis.
It's kinda like Global Warming. If I say it's true (The Weed Fairy), and you can't disprove my theory, then EUREKA!!!!!
Thanks Al Gore, not just for this intrawebs thingy, but for the creative scientific thinking!
[Like most every other thing here along the TX coast, these things have pretty predictable 5 & 10 year cycles, and we look to be heading into some heavy-weed periods, after a few years of relative light-weed conditions. But on the upside, El Nino looks to be kicking back up and with it should be some favorable conditions for increased rainfall [YEA!!!], and poor hurricane conditions [DOUBLE YEA!!!]. |

| The weeds are used as a stabilizer for sand dunes. |

| Poseidon hires cheap labor to mow the weed in the ocean and instead of bagging it up they just let it float to land.. At least that's what my girl believes |

And just about the only fertilizer for the plants which hold the sand in place! _________________ Dave

Believe it or not, it makes the best mulch / fertilzer. It just rots away. Everywhere you put it things turn green. Too bad they don't bag it up and sell it. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I had heard it was good fertilizer so I contemplated bringing a bag back with me to use for my garden. Then I thought "wouldn't the salt trapped in it prevent anything from growing?" Can you just plant it or does it need to be prepared someway first? |

^ right.. w/o sargassum there'd be no Tx barrier islands...
the weed built the islands... and fresh weed adds nutrients to the dunes to grow vegetation to hold the dunes in place..
and help mitigate hurricanes....
as the sargassum dries, wind pushes it into the dunes. where it adds nutrients to the vegetation which grows and helps hold the sand in place.
and that's why we have our beaches backed behind sand dunes and behind them a bay...
the sargassum is a blessing, really... and an inconvienience certain times of the year... also lots of small stuff thrives in the matts...
which creates a vibrant ecosystem... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |
