Heading down for a trip May 4-10. I'm a twice a year beach, pier fisherman.
Looking for a 5 - 6 ft shark.
What are the weeds like during that time?(newbie question I'm sure.)
Also, what type beach conditions should I be looking for to hook up with a decent size black tip or bull? Not looking for anybody's honey hole, just want to know wind, wave, water conditions that I should consider.
Also, best bait choices. I've done some searching and it seems that cut Jack, Pompano, or Mullet seems to work well.
Also, is May a good time of year?
And, if there are any of you guys who don't mind letting a guy from Dallas tag along on a real shark adventure during those dates, I'd love to learn and see what it takes to land a shark from the beach. I'm an avid shore fisherman for big catfish in North East Texas.
But I dream of landing a big shark from the surf! _________________ I now believe that fishing is more important than catching. |

Im no surf pro but I will let ya know I recently pulled 4 nice pomp on National Seashore last week. Weeds where not a huge issue but where definitely present. I pulled the pomp with dead shrimp & pink/white fish bite combo. I do know they love feeding on the small shells in the sand so i walked till I felt a good clump of them and placed my cast around those areas. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/NextLevelFishingTV

May is great but the weed is usually ridiculous along with the wind. July and August are when things really start to calm down and the weed starts to thin. Drive a good stretch before stopping to see if you can find a spot with less weed than other areas. It's amazing what a few miles can do on PINS. The sharks will be there in May if you can keep baits out. Find some deep guts and the blacktips and bulls should be all over the place. Big skipjack, whiting, or chunk up some jack for what you want to do. Oh, and I know pompano are tasty but they make awesome baits too (and flounder for that matter). Depends on your priorities lol. Good thing I prefer red meat over fish |

No.....please do not use any pomps for bait. They are very yummy!
I do agree with the suggestion to use cut skipjack as both reds and other species like that bloody critter!
Hope the weed stays manageable but it seems to worsen every year, at least to my feeble mind!
Have fun! _________________ Mike |
