Hey you all,
That is the way a Yankee would say it.
It's another googan Yankee.
The little lady and I are getting away from this -20 crap up here and we are fixin to do some fishing. I just can't seem to bring myself to dig a hole in a frozen lake and drop a line down from a two foot pole to fish.
We plan on being on PINS every day between the 17th and the 21st of March.
This here Iowa weather stinks.
My wife's mama lives in Rockport so we'll hit the pier at her condo.
Hope to see some of you folks around.
I belong to another forum for when we go out to Virginia an visit our son and daughter-in-law. I met a couple of folks from that forum and its cool to put a face with a screen name.
See ya.

No one can predict the weather, but odds are high, that it'll be warmer here than in Iowa.
Be safe, have a good time, and catch fish! Hope we cross paths in the sand. |

Spring Break always results in a norther and temps in the 50's with rain. It's sort of a law of nature.
Good Luck to you. |

You will not be able to miss us.
Little red car with Iowa plates. Its only 2 wheel drive so we will not be able to get very far down the beach road.
The car also has a big green tube on the roof for transporting long surf rods.
Hopefully I'll be bowed up on a big drum when you go by. |

Be sure not to go past the "4 wheel Drive Only" sign. Conditions may be right for 2 wheel, for a while, but don't be fooled. People tend to not have much tolerance for those that ignore that sign.
Will be looking for you! |

Ok, I have a couple of questions that you guys prolly could answer.
Should I be able to find sand fleas for bait?
Should I bring a pump for catching ghost shrimp for bait?
What about blue crab for bait?
What about clams for bait?
I know fresh dead and live shrimp. I have a bubble bucket. Fresh finger mullet for cut bait.
I have limited space in the car. I bring lots of equipment. I will fish with at least 4 rods in the water. 2 long rods and 2 short rods different bait and rigs on each.
I'm a googan but a fairly well equipped googan.
Oh and one more question; What is a big ugly?
I know there is a big difference in the names of fish between east coast and the gulf.
TX NC
Ling = Cobia
Whiting= Sea Mullet = King fish
Rat Red= Puppy Drum
Slot red fish = Yearling
Bull red = Drum = Oversize red drum
Skip Jack = Lady fish
Sand Tiger Shark = Garbo
Big Ugly = ???????????????? |

Big Ugly's = oversized black drum. You could probably find sand fleas but I think the pumps used to catch them aren't allowed on the national seashore... Blue crab is good bait, not too sure about clams haha. Buy some stuff called fishbites and put that on the hook with your shrimp/crab/mullet too! That stuff works reel well.
I think you're on the right path... But warning, there will be a million people on the island during spring break as well as the 2WD area of the national seashore... _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

| I might be wrong, but I don't think you can use a sand pump on PINS. |

From the PINS website on Ghost Shrimp: Outside of the National Seshore, fishermen use them as bait, using a plunger-like sand pump that sucks the shrimp out of their burrows, but are allowed to collect no more than 20 per day. At the park, these shrimp are protected from being used as bait by fishermen, and extracting the shrimp is prohibited in order to provide a healthy food supply to migratory birds. Even though they are close to the bottom of the food chain, Ghost shrimp are hardy animals, and can survive for up to six days without oxygen. At low tide you can often see little volcano-like holes in the sand, which are Ghost shrimp burrows. At the water's edge, the world underneath your toes is complex and dynamic, and Ghost shrimp are among many other creatures that call this fragile habitat their home. _________________ See ya on the water,

Thanks guys,
I'm glad I asked about the ghost shrimp. I look at a forum for the peir at Gulf Shores Alabama and they are all crazy about getting ghost shrimp.
Go figure you can't catch a shark in the Gulf Shores state park or fish for them but you can get all the ghost shrimp you want.
Thanks for the information.
This is a great site. |

Shrimp and fishbites are all you need during spring unless of course you want to cast up some mullet.
Whiting- sea mullet
Black Drum
Redfish |

Thanks for all the great information. We will be there next week.
I have another question for you guys.
My wife and I don't have a 4x4 so mm 57 is not someplace we are going to get too. I've got a beach cart so we can get down the beach a fair piece from the parking lot. I have been looking at the satilite map and am wondering what would be a place to start.
1. Park at the Bob Hall pier and go down the beach toward Malaquite.
2. Park at the Bob Hall pier and go down the beach the other way.
3. Park at the Malaquite and go down the beach toward Bob Hall pier.
4. Park at the Malaquite and go down the beach the other way.
5. Beach access road along Mustang island.
6. Drive down the beach road until we get stuck and fish right there.
7. Get a life googan and put in your time and you will know where to go.
I think 7 is the best but its worth a try. |
