| Hey all, I'm going to be heading down to PINS in a week or so to camp out and surf fish. What's the bait situation looking like? I normally stop by Billings and then Clem's. Are either carrying any live bait? I'll be fishing the surf and I normally get live shrimp but I haven't seen any at the bait stands in awhile. Also, I've never tried sea lice or crab, how do those fair in the surf? Thanks for all the help. |

| Only bait flags I've seen flying lately are live mullet and mud minnows; I used my sandflea rake a few weeks back south of Bob Hall with no luck (I'm assuming that's the same as sea lice?), I imagine you can suck up some ghost shrimp but not sure; peeled dead shrimp and fishbites work for me in the surf when targeting whiting/pomps/drum and unfortunately the never targeted but often plentiful hardheads... |

guys at red dot said their shrimp boat went out this weekend and got only 17 shrimp. so live shrimp is a bit hard to find. mud minnows and mullet seem to be around. sand fleas and sea lice are 2 completely different things btw _________________ If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am. |

Do you have a castnet? Pinfish and mullet are GREAT bait anytime, anyplace, anywhere. Pinfish in particular are easy to lire into an area with bread pr other offerings, are hardy in the bait well and on the hook.
The best part about using live fish instead of live or dead shrimp is that almost everything that bites is desirable! Ironically, pinfish and hardheads will wear out live or dead shrimp. _________________ Dave

| Thanks for the bait update! I think I'm going to try long acting crab fishbites and also see if I can go catch some mullet with the cast net. Anything been running in the surf as of lately? Since hardheaded are always abundant how do they fair for shark bait? Also how have beach driving conditions been? |
