Well the wife came to me yesterday and said we are out of fish so get off my arse and go fishing and don't come back without more. I do believe that was the sexiest thing she has ever said to me. It leads me to a question however.
I usually hit the surf and get a cooler full of whiting but that is generally in the warmer months. I wanted some input from you guys who fish in the colder months to find out if the whiting fishing is still as productive as it is in the warmer months. Unfortunatly I won't be able to come down to PINS and will have to settle for Galveston but I think the results would be similar all along the coast. Thanks in advance for any input that can help keep Momma happy. |

| Winter is the time for whiting. I don't fish Galveston but in the Corpus Area this is the time. If you fish for them it is not uncommon to fill up a cooler with 14" whiting in the winter. The fish tend to run larger in the cooler months. |

That certainly isn't the case down here in Port Isabel or SPI. They have been really hard to find anywhere in mass. One or two per person seems to be the norm for about an hour or two. UGH _________________ FishLady

I fished for the first time on pins in Feb. 2013. My brother, cousins and I set up camp at the 20 and had us a good ol' time catching whiting. _________________ "I'm telling you, those Reds are in there THICK! |

Fishlady..... I've never caught whiting or much of anything in the surf down there, I destroy them at the jetties but the surf fishing on SPI just seems much slower than the Corpus area and I don't know why.[/quote] _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |

Same here for the SPI surf. I can usually catch enough for bait, but not much more. At the jetties, I usually do pretty well.
My trips down there are usually in June and October, so I cannot speak for the winter fishing, though. _________________

| Thanks for the replies. Kinda interesting info. In the summertime my go to area in corpus is the first access road at PINS. Never had any trouble catching as many as I wanted to clean. I am keeping an eye on the Galveston surf and as long as it's not going to fill my waders I am going to give it a try tomorrow. Will post my results. Again thanks. |

Surf fishing on SPI is terrible. I've been a bunch of times & never caught anything. |

Sure Rob. For some reason i dont believe you. Oh yeah, i remember why. I used to live down there too. I caught more fish down there than here. Not as many reds or pompano but everything else. |

| Well the fishing was not all I hoped it would be but a good trip none the less. Ended up with 8 pretty good sized whiting. And of course once the fishing started picking up so did the waves and ended up soaked in my waders. Oh well. Got enough for a nice grilled dinner last night but did not fill Mamma's requested to put some in the freezer. At least that leaves me with an excuse to go again soon. |

If you were filling your waders, you may have been fishing too far out to get on a good whiting bite. I hardly get past my ankles when fishing for whiting. You might have been standing on the fish casting out past them. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

^^^ Boy TopDog, you said a mouthful there.
Whiting in the first gut is pretty much a given.
And I can't count the number of times I have been spearfishing on the jetties and seen a literal highway of reds and trout and mangroves and sheepsheads moving along the base of the rocks, but everybody on the jetties are casting as far as they can throw...... Into nothing but sand. Vast quantities of featureless sand... While all those good fish are right at your feet!
Just like the whiting in the first gut. |

Exactly right. This past weekend we weren't going further than miss calf and casting out. Loaded the ice chest with whiting! _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I agree about the first gut except we fished it for hours without anything. Where I did get into the fish was close to San Luis pass and the guts were not as obvious there as they are along most of the coast. I was actually catching fish where i was but the tide was coming in and the current was pretty strong and started kicking up some decent swells. I was only standing in thigh deep water. Definatly an unusual day of fishing. Also the tide was way out most of the day and the first gut was almost non existant. |
